Vietnamese Universities Earn Greater Reputation Worldwide

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology under Vietnam National University (VNU)-Ho Chi Minh City and University of Science and Technology under Da Nang University are among the seven Vietnamese universities that meet international accreditation standards.

The others are Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, the University of Science under VNU-Hanoi, HCM City based-Ton Duc Thang University, and International University under VNU-Ho Chi Minh City, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

As many as 180 educational facilities at university and college levels satisfy national standards on educational quality.

Vietnamese universities have earned a greater reputation worldwide as more of their programs have received recognition and higher rankings from the UK’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) this year, according to VietnamPlus.

The 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject cover a total of 51 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas, namely Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.

The VNU-Hanoi gained recognition in six specific subject areas. It was placed in the group of 351 – 400 in Mathematics; 501 – 550 in Computer Science and Information Systems; and 451 – 500 in Engineering – Civil and Structural; Physics and Astronomy; Business and Management Studies; and Engineering – Electrical and Electronic.

The HUST made it into five disciplines' rankings. The university was ranked in the group of 301 – 350 in Engineering – Electrical and Electronic, Engineering – Mechanical, and Engineering – Civil and Structural, up 100 spots from the previous ranking.

The university’s Computer Science and Information Systems climbed 150 places to rank in the group of 401 – 450.

This year marked the first time its Mathematics and Materials Sciences courses have been listed in the ranking, entering the 351 – 400 and 401 – 410 groups, respectively.

Overall, HUST ranked No.1 in Vietnam and 360th worldwide in Engineering and Technology.

The VNU, Ho Chi Minh City was available in seven subject areas’ rankings, including Modern Languages (251 – 300), Engineering – Electrical and Electronic (301 – 350), Engineering – Chemical (351 – 400), Computer Sciences and Information Systems (401 – 450), Mathematics (401 – 450), Chemistry (601 – 630). Notably, its ranking in Engineering – Petroleum advanced from last year’s 101 – 150 to 51 – 100 this year.

Vietnamese universities have shown strong performances in Engineering and Technology with five earning rankings in this area, including VNU-Hanoi, VNU-HCM, HUST, Duy Tan University, and Ton Duc Thang University, according to Viet Nam News.

Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU – HCM)

Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) was officially established in 1996, after the merger of nine universities members. VNU-HCM is a multidisciplinary, highly qualified, and advanced center for post-secondary education and science-technology research activities which plays a key role in the national higher education system and is able to satisfy development needs. In terms of human resources, VNUHCM has more than 5,000 staff including 3,200 lecturers, 2,100 officers, and 1000 researchers, among which are over 300 Professors and Associate Professors, 1,000 Doctors, and 2.100 Masters.

Da Nang University

Established in 1994, Da Nang University is the biggest university in central Vietnam. It consists of 11 member universities and affiliated training units and is a multi-level, multi-disciplinary university with the main strengths in Engineering, Technology, Economics, Education, and Foreign Languages. The university is also one of the very first educational institutions in Vietnam that have engaged in the national higher education accreditation system and have 24 educational programs accredited internationally (as of 03/2021).

Hanoi University of Science and Technology

Established in 1956, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) is Vietnam’s first multidisciplinary technical university. It is the industrial engineer training center of the country during building and development processes, and the cradle of high-quality human resources for the country’s modernization and industrialization.

Hanoi University of Civil Engineering

Founded in 1966, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering functions as a place for studying, teaching, conducting research, transferring technological science, and creating numerous important contributions to production reality. It has been a vibrant hub for students, professors, and scholars in the field of engineering in Vietnam and several neighboring countries.

It has provided more than 60,000 engineers and architects; over 4500 Masters, and 170 doctors of various fields in construction.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU)

In 1945, on the basis of the University of Indochina, Vietnam National University was established and later renamed the University of Hanoi in 1956. In 1993, VNU was reorganized on the basis of amalgamating three leading universities in Hanoi, with the aim of establishing a high-quality, multidisciplinary, and multi-sectoral regional center that gradually reaches international standards.

In the 2015 – 2020 period, VNU basically completed the targets of the development strategy up to 2020; gradually established its No. 1 position in Vietnam, and was featured in the group of Asia and the world-leading universities.

Ton Duc Thang University

With 20,000 students and 1320 staff, the university has five campuses, two in HCM City, one in Nha Trang Beach, one in Lam Dong province, and one in Ca Mau Province in the Mekong Delta region. The university currently has 16 faculties, 50 research groups, and 66 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs with many interdisciplinary research opportunities. The university is focusing on high-quality research, training, and internationalization. By 2020, it offers over 300 scholarships covering 100% tuition fees and dormitory fees.
