The QS World University Rankings 2024 ranks a total of 1,499 universities, with 83 entering the list for the first time, out of the 2,963 universities from 104 countries and territories. It is the 20th year that Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published the rankings. It draws conclusions based on an analysis of 17.5 million academic studies and expert opinions of more than 240,000 teaching staff and employers globally.

According to Euronews, Europe claimed five out of the top 10 positions, while English-speaking universities dominate the upper echelons of the rankings with perfect scores in categories such as academic reputation, employer reputation, and faculty/student ratio.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, United States, secured the top spot with a flawless overall score of 100 for the 12th consecutive year.

The University of Cambridge in the UK follows closely behind, claiming second place with 99.2 points, while local rival the University of Oxford secured third place with 98.9 points.

Harvard University took the fourth spot with a score of 98.3, and Stanford University ranked fifth with 98.1 points.

The total score is based on nine factors, including academic reputation, employability reputation, student-faculty ratio, number of research, foreign faculty/staff ratio, international student ratio, international research networks, recruitment outcomes, and sustainability.

The UK’s higher education marketing company Quacquarelli Symonds, which implements the QS World Rankings, says these factors "reflect changes in higher education that have taken place over the past two decades, such as the growing importance of sustainability, employment rates, and research collaboration”.

When comparing the rankings of 2018 and 2024, we can see a significant increase in the number of universities representing Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. In 2018, universities in these regions accounted for about 37%. However, by 2024, it has increased to 46% in the rankings with 1,500 schools in 104 countries and territories.

Singapore also has another representative, which is Nanyang Technological University in 26th place along with the University of Hong Kong (China). Prominent Asian universities mentioned in this ranking are Peking University (17th) and Tsinghua University (25th) in China, the University of Tokyo Japan (28th), and Seoul University of Korea (41st).
