In 2023, Vietnam continues to leave many meaningful diplomatic marks at multilateral forums, including the United Nations.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of Vietnam's permanent delegation to the UN, said those achievements have contributed to enhancing Vietnam's image and position in the eyes of international friends.

2023 is a year of many changes, with conflicts and challenges, and the international security situation is especially complicated.

Geopolitical competition has been pushed to a new high in decades, trust between countries is diminished at a time when the world needs international unity and solidarity.

All pose great responsibilities and expectations for the United Nations to play its role in maintaining international peace and security, promoting friendly relations between countries, carrying out international cooperation, coordinating international efforts and common goals.

In that context, Vietnam continues to prove itself as a responsible member, effectively participating in the common work of the United Nations, with more meaningful contributions.

Vietnam upholds its ideology and stance in support of peace, development, respect for international law, multilateralism, and most importantly, compliance with the United Nations Charter on all pillars from peace, security, development to human rights protection.

According to Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, the highlight of Vietnamese diplomacy in 2023 is successfully assuming the position of Vice Chairman of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (9/2022-9/2023).

Vietnam participated in the process of proposing and planning important decisions in the world, especially in the context that in 2023 the United Nations General Assembly has to handle a huge amount of work with the busiest work program in many years.

Vietnam contributed ideas and initiatives to many ongoing processes at the United Nations to shape the future.

In 2023, Vietnam continued to make meaningful contributions as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, the International Law Commission (2023-2027), and the UNESCO Executive Board (2021-2025), Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (2022-2026).

While undertaking those responsibilities, Vietnam contributed to the common work of the United Nations on all three pillars of peace and security, development and human rights.

Regarding peace and security, Vietnam always promotes common efforts to enhance the role of the United Nations, builds a global governance system on the basis of rule of law, respect for the United Nations Charter and widely recognized international standards.

Vietnam's consistent viewpoint is always to put people at the center, the driving force of all policy decisions. This is also the guiding principle that the United Nations always strives to pursue.

Vietnam has been participating in many core groups, participating in proposing, coordinating, and negotiating many initiatives and cooperation documents on education, health, water resource protection, energy conversion, and climate change response.

Vietnam continues to actively implement the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), striving to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Representatives of the United Nations and many countries appreciated Vietnam's practical and proactive contributions.

United Nations Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis stated clearly that Vietnam is affirming its position and role in the region and globally, including taking on the role of non-permanent member of the Security Council, member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, one of the leading contributors to peacekeeping activities.

Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam Rana Flowers affirmed that Vietnam is a responsible member in multilateral processes.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang forecasts that the international situation in 2024 will still be extremely complicated with unstable factors and workload. Therefore, the level of friction and complexity in United Nations multilateral activities will increase.

Vietnam will continue to promote the implementation of a foreign policy of independence, autonomy, multilateralization, diversification, and comprehensive, extensive, and effective international integration.
