156 Vietnamese Officers to Set off for UN Peacekeeping Mission at Abyei

On the afternoon of June 12, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (Ministry of National Defense) held a ceremony to see off the remaining 156 out of a total of 184 members of Vietnam's Military Engineer Unit No. 1 joining the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

This time, the remaining force of the Military Engineer Unit No. 1 traveled from Noi Bai airport to Uganda - the United Nations logistics base station and also the intermediary focal point to complete procedures before entering the mission in Abyei. Members will then move gradually on smaller flights from Uganda to a United Nations transit base, 200 kilometers from Abyei.

Speaking about assign tasks and encouraging members of the Unit, the representative of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations also asked officers and employees to strictly observe the operating discipline, flight safety regulations, and procedures for Covid-19 prevention and control, ensuring absolute safety during the march to the field.

During the performance of their duties in the field, all members must uphold the spirit of solidarity, affection, and mutual assistance, promote the bravery and qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, accomplish many achievements, and complete all assigned tasks at the mission.

After the farewell ceremony, the team carried out the necessary procedures to board the plane and officially go to Abyei to join forces with their colleagues to participate in UN peacekeeping operations.

To realize the policy for troop’s families, and to bring a sense of spiritual encouragement for engineers, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations has reviewed and visited needy families and families with relatives suffering from serious diseases. In addition, policies for officers and employees in the unit are also guaranteed to be sufficient and timely following the regulations.

The visit to 18 families was jointly conducted by the Military Engineer Unit No. 1, authorized agencies under the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and local party committees and authorities. The activity was significant to boost understanding between the Unit, its members’ families, and local authorities, consolidating the solidarity and mutual support among members of the Unit.

At the same time, the representative of the unit also promptly informed the families of the members of the team about the meaning of participating in the United Nations peacekeeping mission; promptly encourage and stabilize the thoughts and psychology of officers in the unit and their families; hence inspire all members to overcome all difficulties and fulfill all assignments by the Party, the State, and the military.

The Military Engineer Unit No. 1 was officially launched on November 17, 2021. This is the first time that Vietnam has a team of Engineers participating in UN peacekeeping operations, also the largest unit-level formation ever of Vietnam participating in peacekeeping activities with 184 people. Members come from many agencies and units in the Army, including the Corps of Engineers, the Special Forces, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Forces of Information and Communications, and other members of the military medical force.

Previously, from the end of March 2022, more than 2,000 tons of equipment and goods of the Unit were sent to the mission in Abyei by sea. A front-line team of officers of Military Engineer Unit No. 1 also went to the UNISFA mission to receive all these goods and equipment and carry out initial operations.
