An internationa laboratory to support work in artificial intelligence has been opened in Vietnam.

The opening ceremony was held online. The laboratory is the first collaboration project between Naver Corporation (South Korea) and the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (Vietnam). With this project, the university has officially become a part of Naver’s Global AI R&D Belt. The Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology is the second university in Vietnam to receive this technology.

Choi In Hyuk, executive director of Naver Corporation, said cooperating with the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology was a milestone in developing the Global Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Belt.

“By jointly establishing the new artificial intelligence center, we hope to create the best artificial intelligence research and training center in Vietnam,” Choi said.

Before the new laboratory was launched, experts from the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology had worked with lead researchers from Naver Labs in Europe to carry out joint projects. These projects are expected to contribute to advancing digitalization technologies in Vietnam.

Nguyen Minh Hong, president of Vietnam Digital Communications Association, said the new laboratory would contribute to Vietnam’s National strategy for research, development, and application of artificial intelligence to 2030. He suggested that the laboratory should develop artificial intelligence programs at the local level, thereby boosting the digitalization process in all provinces in Vietnam.

Vu Van San, director of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology said Naver’s Global Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Belt, in addition to the institute’s ongoing research projects, would play a role in developing highly advanced technologies made in Vietnam.

To run the new laboratory, the Institute and Naver Corporation have jointly appointed experts to serve as co-heads of the laboratory, who will work closely with leading researchers in the field. The laboratory’s main activities include providing academic and training for students on Embedded, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, and data, and organizing exchange programs for students and lecturers.

Accordingly, students and lecturers from Vietnam will have the opportunity to partake in exchange activities held by Naver. In addition, Naver will transfer the corporation’s state-of-the-art technologies and products, support to develop new curriculum and international training programs, provide scholarships for top Artificial Intelligence students, and implement research projects jointly developed by Naver and the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology.

Previously in July 2020, another artificial intelligence laboratory center was launched at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. A component of Naver’s Global Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Belt, the center was created by Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Naver to enhance the exchange of technologies between Vietnam and other countries, creating favorable conditions to nurture top talents in the field of artificial intelligence from Korea, Japan, France and Vietnam.
