ASEAN Film Week 2020 kicks off with Vietnamese movie about mother' love

The ASEAN Film Week 2020 is being held in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City from July 18-26, screening nine movies of ASEAN member states including eight feature films and one animation.
During the week, screenings of Hanh phuc cua me (Mother’s happiness) of Vietnam; Ranggau, Thousand Incarnations of Brunei; Young Love of Cambodia; Aruna Dan Lidahnya of Indonesia; Expiration Date of Laos; Ejen Ali the Movie of Malaysia; Women of the Weeping River of the Philippines; The Wayang Kids of Singapore and App War of Thailand will also take place.
The movie that will represent Indonesia in the ASEAN Film Week 2020 is "Aruna and Her Palate" (Aruna dan Lidahnya). The movie, based on a novel by the award-winning author, Laksmi Pamuntjak, follows the story of Aruna, an epidemiologist assigned to investigate bird flu outbreaks in various city in Indonesia. She is joined by her best friend, Bono and Nad, and the trio uses the business trip as an opportunity to go on a culinary adventure.

Made-in-Singapore movie “The Wayang Kids” is about a group of children who overcome cultural and language barriers to represent their school in an international Chinese opera performance. These young actors, selected from an audition of 500 students, underwent weeks of Chinese opera, acting and language classes to prepare for their first ever roles in a feature film.
Ejen Ali The Movie representing Malaysia at this year’s Asean Film Week, follows a 12-year-old boy who after being accidentally recruited as a spy has now grown to embrace his role in secret agency Meta Advance Tactical Agency (MATA), to protect the futuristic city of Cyberaya from outside threats.
Based on the 2016 animated television series, the spy action film which was released on November 28, 2019 collected over RM 30.8 million (over 7.2 million) at the box-office in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia.

The Vietnamese movie Hanh phuc cua me (Mother’s happiness) premiered at the opening ceremony on July 18 in Hanoi.
The movie, directed by Pham Huynh Dong won the Golden Kite Award 2019 for feature movie, the annual prestigious film award of the Vietnam Cinema Association, tells story about a poor single mom who supports her autistic son in pursuing his passion for dancing. It also received other titles, including “Best Director” for Pham Huynh Dong, “Best Screenplay” for writers Nguyen Thi Ngoc Bich and Luong Kim Lien, “Best Cameraman” for Vo Thanh Tien, “Best Actress” for Cat Phuong, “Best Promising Young Actor” for Huy Khanh and “Best Sound Mixing”.
The regional event is organised by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as part of celebrations to mark the country’s 2020 ASEAN Chairmanship.
Themed “ASEAN Cohesion and Proactive Adaptation”, the event is expected to help audience understand more about cultures, lives and peoples of ASEAN member states, and contribute to enhancing mutual understanding, thus creating a foundation to expand cooperation in economics and politics.
All the movies will be screened once for free in each city.
Movie tickets are distributed at the movie venue from July 13 at the National Cinema Center, Hanoi; from July 14 at Le Do Cinema, Da Nang and from July 17 at CineStar Cinema Cluster, 135 Hai Ba Trung, Ho Chi Minh City.
