ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteer Forum opens in Vietnam

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Youth Volunteer Forum and ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteer Awards opened in the central province of Quảng Bình on August 24.

The four-day event, organised by the National Committee for Youth in Vietnam (NCYV) and the Central Committee of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMYU), brings together 50 volunteers from ASEAN countries and Japan. The awarding ceremony of the ASEAN Open Youth Volunteer Award 2022 will take place on the evening of August 26.

It aims to offer an opportunity for ASEAN plus youth to exchange ideas and experience in volunteerism, and introduce the culture and people of Vietnam as well as the country’s socio-economic development to international friends. Outstanding individuals and organisations from ASEAN plus countries are also honored at the event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Tuong Lam, Secretary of the HCMYU and Standing Vice Chairman of the NCYV, said the world has witnessed and experienced unprecedented challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past three years. Many volunteering activities and projects have been carried out throughout the region and globally to overcome these challenges.

The leader of HCMYU noted that a lot of community initiatives have been deployed by Vietnamese youth, focusing on activities on digital platforms.

Lam expected this program will create a favorable environment for ASEAN Plus youth to share and discuss their ideas, experiences in volunteerism; to create connection and mechanism of youth volunteer cooperation in the region; and to recognize the outstanding and most contributed individual as well as organization in term of youth volunteerism and that a network of volunteer individuals and organisations in the region will be built after the event, helping spread the volunteerism spirit and jointly contribute to the recovery and development of the region and the world.

Ekkaphab Phanthavong, Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) of ASEAN for Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), said the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Youth Volunteer Forum and ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteer Award is an important initiative towards achieving a caring and sharing ASEAN community especially among young people, which is a long-term priority in the region. He wishes the four-day program many successes and that this initiative will help contributes to a more open and adaptive ASEAN Community open, as well as a dynamic, harmonious and proactively network of global youth community.
