With nearly two decades of experience in Taekwondo, Pham Hoang Quoc Bao, a 37-year-old from Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city, has become a source of inspiration, training countless talents for both national and international teams.
Bao attributes his passion for martial arts to his father, Pham Van Minh, who currently serves as the Head of the Representative Office of the Mekong Delta Martial Arts Research Institute. Starting his Taekwondo journey at the age of 5, Bao opened his own martial arts class in 2006, with a focus on supporting children in challenging circumstances. By 2013, he had extended his efforts to provide free martial arts lessons to orphans and children with disabilities.
Beyond Taekwondo, Bao has also played a pivotal role in introducing and developing Pencak Silat in Can Tho city. After receiving mentorship from Nguyen Van Biet, Chairman of the Pencak Silat Association of Tien Giang Province, Bao became a Pencak Silat coach, bringing this martial art to local children.
His small house has transformed into more than just a training space—it is a sanctuary for the children he supports. Alongside his wife, he ensures their daily needs are met, offering meals, companionship, and guidance to help them overcome life's challenges.
Over the last 10 years, Bao has cared for 20 children facing difficult circumstances, covering their educational expenses, teaching martial arts, and paving the way for them to pursue professional sports. Among his students, Nguyen Quoc Trong Hieu, a visually impaired 25-year-old, stands out as a remarkable success story. With Bao’s persistent guidance, Hieu has won multiple accolades, including a City-level Gold Medal and a Southeast Asian Silver Medal. Today, Hieu is a Pencak Silat coach and holds a 3rd-degree Taekwondo rank.

Another notable example is Nguyen Duc Chanh, a 25-year-old who lost his father at a young age. With Bao’s support, Chanh graduated from Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and has since become a coach in both Pencak Silat and Taekwondo, as well as a national referee with a stable income.
In addition to his classes, Bao conducts free martial arts training during the summer, introduces students to refereeing opportunities, offers financial assistance to children from poor families, and actively participates in charity initiatives.
Nguyen Minh Thanh, Secretary of the An Khanh Ward Youth Union, praised Bao for his commitment to social welfare and charity work, noting that many of the children he has mentored have gone on to achieve impressive results in competitions.
Looking ahead, Bao plans to expand his efforts by providing free martial arts training, eradicating illiteracy, and creating job opportunities for homeless and disadvantaged children. He dreams of offering these children a chance to study, grow, and rise above their circumstances.
Pham Hoang Quoc Bao’s journey is a shining testament to the transformative power of love, resilience, and determination. Through his efforts, he continues to nurture the dreams of disadvantaged children in Can Tho city, paving the way for them to achieve brighter futures.
