Addressing the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam highlighted outstanding achievements that ASEAN has gained across all pillars of politics - diplomacy, economy, and socio-culture over the years, building the bloc in the complicated global context.

The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed the important role and position of ASEAN in Vietnam's foreign policy, VOV reported. In her speech, Tam mentioned the country's major contributions to consolidating a strong and united ASEAN, as well as building relationships with partners after 29 years of joining the group. Vietnam will continue implementing the initiative of organizing the annual ASEAN Future Forum, she said.

On the same day, the Vietnamese Embassy, in cooperation with other countries, organized the ASEAN Family Day with diverse activities. Participants can enjoy authentic cuisines from the ASEAN countries and take part in folk games to explore their cultures and customs.

This special occasion has become a tradition among members of the association in Sri Lanka. Currently, five ASEAN members have opened their representative offices in Colombo. They have regularly coordinated with each other as well as the local administration to promote the image of a united ASEAN Community to local and international friends.

On 8 August 1967 marks the signing of the ASEAN Declaration, which took place at the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok (Thailand). The five Foreign Ministers who signed it – the Founding Fathers of the bloc – are Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand. ASEAN consists of 10 member states, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
