Da Nang to Take Better Care of the Elderly
HelpAge International in Vietnam (HAI) recently, in collaboration with the Danang Representative Board of the Association of the Elderly (AE), has successfully organized orientation training for the project “Reducing income and health-related vulnerability of older persons in Vietnam.”
The training was organized in two forms, onsite at Da Nang and online at Hanoi. |
Participants included representatives of HAI, leaders of the Da Nang city government and the districts that established Intergenerational Self-Help Club (ISHC), departments, agencies and organizations.
At the training, agencies, departments, AE at all levels and stakeholders were introduced to the project, the ISHC model and discussed coordination among stakeholders in supporting ISHCs and projects.
Le Van Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs (MOLISA), said that the ISHC model was a humane and effective model that brought practical benefits for society and the community, supporting disadvantaged older people, improving their economy, health, contributing to better care, and promoting the role of older people in the community.
In the coming months, MOLISA will continue to closely coordinate with the AE and related sectors to advise the City People's Committee on organizing the replication of the ISHC model. As a result, older people in the city can fully enjoy their rights and benefits and contribute to the city's development.
Tran Bich Thuy, a representative of HAI, emphasized that ISHC cannot be effective without the support and coordination of departments, agencies, and organizations.
ISHC will be a helping hand, a solid foundation in the community, implementing the Party's and local government's guidelines and policies, ensuring security, and promoting economic and social development.
Hopefully, with the enthusiasm, dedication, and responsibility of AE, local authorities, and the departments, branches, and organizations present today, the project will achieve the set goals, contributing to Plan No. 811/KH-UBND of the People's Committee of Da Nang signed on March 11, 2021 on approving the plan to replicate ISHC by 2025.
Da Nang has 24 ISHCs, with 10 participating in the VIE071 project.
Da Nang Association of the Elderly has a foundation for developing a project to build new ISHCs and submitting it to the Provincial People's Committee.
By 2025, the city aims to have all communes and wards with ISHCs.
There are currently 3442 ISHCs operating in 61/63 provinces/cities across Vietnam. The ISHC model has been incorporated in Prime Minister's Decision No. 1533 and 1336 on "Approving the Nationwide Replication of ISHC" due to its diversity, efficacy, sustainability, and relevance. ISHC was reintegrated into Vietnam's National Plan of Action for Older Persons in December 2021 to have an ISHC (or a similar model) in at least 80% of communes by 2030. The project "Reducing income and health-related vulnerability of older persons in Vietnam" (Project VIE071) was funded by Japan through the Japan Social development Bank and administered by the World Bank in Vietnam. |
