The 2021-22 edition of the Premier League kicks off this weekend as Everton take on Southampton at Goodison Park on Saturday. Both teams have a point to prove this season and will want to win this game.

Everton started strongly under Carlo Ancelotti last year but eventually slumped to a 10th-place finish. The Toffees have impressive players in their ranks but will need to justify their potential in the coming months.

Southampton have also been fairly inconsistent in recent years and secured a 15th-place finish last season. The Saints can pack a punch on their day but will need to make the most of their squad this weekend.

Everton is going head to head with Southampton starting on 14 Aug 2021 at 14:00 UTC at Goodison Park stadium, Liverpool city, England. The match is a part of the Premier League.

Head-to-Head

Everton have a good record against Southampton and have won 50 games out of a total of 105 matches played between the two teams. Southampton have managed 32 victories against Everton and can trouble their opponents on Saturday.

The previous meeting between the two Premier League teams took place earlier this year and ended in a 1-0 victory for Everton. Southampton were impressive on the day but will need to be more clinical this weekend.

Everton vs Southampton Predicted XI

Everton Predicted XI (4-4-2): Jordan Pickford; Lucas Digne, Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane, Seamus Coleman; Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andros Townsend, Alex Iwobi; James Rodriguez, Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton vs Southampton Prediction

Everton have an excellent squad at their disposal but cannot afford to underperform yet again this season. The likes of James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have proved their mettle in the Premier League and will need to step up this weekend.

With Danny Ings now at Aston Villa, Southampton will need to find alternative attacking options in the final third. Everton are the better team at the moment and should be able to win this game.

Prediction: Everton 2-1 Southampton

Southampton look up against it

Southampton endured a torrid second half to last season, winning the fewest points of any Premier League team over the last 25 games of the campaign. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men ended in 15th place, having briefly held top spot early on.

Saints leaked 68 goals, the second-worst tally in the division, while they suffered the ignominy of a second 9-0 drubbing in as many seasons, this time by Manchester United.

Everton, now under the guidance of the more defensively orientated Benitez, may not be able to inflict a similar thumping but there is no doubt that they should be favourites going into this clash. Odds on that outcome of almost even money make the home win most appealing, particularly with their opponents winning a mere four times on the road last term.

Tip: Everton to win @ 10/11 with Sky Bet

No Ings, no goals

Only the top two won more away games than the Toffees last term and it was their Goodison form that let them down, Everton winning six and losing nine of their 19 home games.

However, they are taking on a side who were far from impressive on the road last term, scoring just 19 times and conceding 43. To make matters worse, last season’s top goalscorer Danny Ings has been sold to Aston Villa, which immediately puts a question mark over where the goals will come from.

Benitez will certainly work his magic to tighten up the Toffees defence, having done so brilliantly at Newcastle United on his previous venture in the Premier League, but life will be easier without the former Liverpool forward to contend with.

Southampton will be desperate to use the money from the sale on a new forward, and are closing in on a deal for Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong, but he is unproven at this level and will have little time to adapt to his new team-mates if he makes the step up from the Championship in time.

Correct score can pay dividend

Staying on the theme, it is difficult to see a raft of goals in this game with both squads still getting up to full fitness after a shorter than usual pre-season. There are various ways to play this.

Under 2.5 goals is worthy of consideration at 10/11 while opposing both teams to score at 1/1 is also an option, but going for the correct score is a tempting chance at much bigger odds of 6/1.

Everton won this fixture last season 1-0 and also triumphed by the same scoreline in their opening fixture at Tottenham, while Southampton went down by the solitary goal on their opening-day trip to Crystal Palace.

Benitez’s men have not exactly excelled in pre-season fixtures so it is unlikely they are going to take a gung-ho approach early on.

With the Spanish tactician desperate to make the right early impressions, a 1-0 home win at 6/1 looks tempting.

Everton vs Southampton odds

Everton are 10/11 to win on Saturday, with Southampton 3/1 and the draw priced at 5/2.
