FNF Proposes Climate Change Response Collaboration with Can Tho City

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation Institute proposes collaboration with Can Tho Union of Friendship Organizations to implement climate change response, highlights the need for clean water, waste treatment, air quality control and efficient use of energy for the city's sustainable economic development.

On Nov. 1 202, President of Can Tho Union of Friendship Organizations (Can Tho Union) Le Thi Thanh Giang met with the delegation of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Institute (FNF) from Germany. The head of the German delegation was Prof. Dr. Andreas Stoffers - Country Director of FNF in Vietnam.

Sustainable economic development in Can Tho city

Can Tho city has great potential for investment cooperation, said the President of Can Tho Union. In particular, since 2020, Political Bureau of the Communist Party had decided on the long-term goal of developing Can Tho city to be the city model of ecological, civilized and modern city imbued with the cultural identity of the Mekong Delta region by 2030. In addition, the city will become the center of the region in terms of trade services, tourism, logistics, processing industry within the next few years.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Stoffers - Country Director of FNF Vietnam highly appreciated the potential advantages of Can Tho city raised by the Can Tho Union, and stressed that as the center of the Mekong Delta region with various agriculture and processing industry areas, Can Tho city will also face severe impacts of climate change. Two sides further discussed the impacts of climate change in Can Tho city and went to generalize the appropriate climate change response.

FNF stated that they want to support Can Tho's sustainable economic development. FNF proposes collaboration with Can Tho Union to implement climate change response for 2021- 2024 period. The proposal highlights the need for clean water, waste treatment, air quality control and efficient use of energy.

Within the framework of the project, FMF want to hold regular scientific conferences to consult stakeholders on climate change issues, and to conduct in-depth research so that the results can make useful recommendations and communicate to the public.

Le Thi Thanh Giang - President of the Union shared many potentials ways to develop projects in Can Tho city. She said she believed the projects with FNF could create many mutual benefits between the city and the organization. The Chairman of Can Tho Union said that the Can Tho Union will give full support FNF in connecting partners when implementing projects in the city.

On the same day, the Can Tho City Union of Friendship Groups and FNF leaders had a workshop with Can Tho University to exchange information about Climate Change Project in Can Tho. The head of the delegation from Can Tho University is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hieu Trung, Vice Rector of Can Tho University (CTU) - Director of the Climate Change Research Institute.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hieu Trung highly appreciated the proposal to implement the climate change project in Can Tho city and said that CTU is ready to accompany FNF.

He added that in addition to training human resources for the region, the Institute for Climate Change Research - CTU also conducts human resources training and collaborates with other provinces and cities in the region for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta. The Institute Director hopes that this collaboration will bring practical benefits to the local people.

The two sides agreed to continue the discussions within the next few months so that the project can be implemented soon in 2022.

President of Can Tho Union agreed with the idea and affirmed that the Union was happy to work with CIU and FNF on this project. She affirmed that Can Tho always welcomes investors and organizations and will help FNF with formality procedures.
