Understanding Hung Kings' Tradition

Hung King Commemoration Day is a special national holiday, celebrating the first founders of the nation, who built and preserved the country in the early years of Vietnam's history. The festival began as a local holiday in Hung Temple which is located in Co Tich hamlet, Hy Cuong Commune, Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province but has become recognized as a national holiday starting in 2007. The People's Committee of Phu Tho province organizes the Hung Temple Festival, which commemorates the Kings death anniversary of the Hungs with solemn and dignified national ceremonies.

On this day, Vietnamese from all over the nation and the world would gather at the foot of Ngoc Linh Mountain in Phu Tho to offer incense in memory of the Hung Kings. They express their deep gratitude to all the people who have contributed to building the country, carrying within them a respect for their ancestors.

The annual Hung Temple festival is an occasion for people across the country to express the tradition of “Drink water remember the source." This is a Vietnamese proverb that speaks of remembering where one comes from and consolidating the unity of the whole nation.

The occasion is also a reminder of the country's core values, kinship and resilience as proof for the Vietnamese can overcome anything and thrive to future development.

Hung Kings' Festival in 2022, What's new?

Anniversaries of the Hung Kings in the year of the Tiger - 2022 with the theme " Sacred roots, the land of the Hung Kings " will take place from the 6th to the 10th of the third lunar month, held in association with the 10th Anniversary of UNESCO's recognition for Hung King's worship tradition in Phu Tho as an intangible cultural heritage.

The ceremonies included the death anniversary of Lac Long Quan and the incense offering ceremony to commemorate Au Co's mother on the 6th day of the 3rd Lunar month; The incense offering ceremony in memory of the Hung Kings on the 10th of the third month in the Lunar calendar and the flower offering ceremony at the mural depicting Uncle Ho talking to the 308 Infantry Division.

On the occasion of the Hung Kings Anniversary, on April 7th (the 7th of the third Lunar month), a march in a procession will be held at the Hung Temple. This procession starts at the foot of the mountain and stops at every small temple before reaching the High Temple. This is a traditional celebration that has been maintained and conserved for many years by communes in the neighborhood of the monument, displaying community and cultural elements, national symbols, and qualities, thanks to predecessors' merits, and gratitude to the origin.

Unfortunately, due to the current situation of COVID-19, some of the annual highlight activities are unable to happen such as Hung Kings' Fair, Hung King's Cup Volleyball tournament, street festivals, etc. Some other activities organized by the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Festival of Ethnic Minorities in the Northwest region organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism are scheduled to be held in Phu Tho on this occasion will also be postponed until an appropriate time.

In association with the ceremonies, there are interesting festival events such as the traditional festival of Hung Lo communal house and the ceremony to receive the certificate of recognition of the national intangible cultural heritage and the certificate of recognition of the provincial tourist area at Hung Lo commune, Viet Tri city on the 8th day of the lunar calendar.

Fireworks are expected to be displayed at Van Lang Park Stage, Viet Tri city on the 9th of April as an activity marking the 10th Anniversary of UNESCO's recognition of Worshiping Hung King as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
