Indian daily Times of India on November 1 ran an article by Baladas Ghoshal, a scholar from the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies of India, that held that the encroachment of Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) by China’s Haiyang Dizhi 8 vessel clearly impinged on Vietnam’s territorial integrity and economic security.

The professor also said India must accord the BienDong Sea a higher priority and greater seriousness in foreign policy, taking into account geo-economic realities.

India’s strategic ties with countries in the region, especially with Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines, have become stronger under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Act East Policy.

The scholar further said India has as much stake in peace and tranquility in the BienDong Sea as any other regional power such as ASEAN member nations, China, Japan or the US. ASEAN also wants India to take a more active role in the emerging political, economic and security architecture of Indo-Pacific and this fits in with New Delhi’s own image as an emerging global power./.
