International Olympiad in Informatics: Vietnamese Students Win 1 Gold, 3 Silvers

The 34th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2022) was held in Indonesia, on August 7-15.
It is one of the 14 International Science Olympiads held every year. Of the various olympiads, IOI is the 4th oldest olympiad and with the 2nd largest number of participating countries.
The 34th IOI was held with the theme “Digital Energy of Asia”, in line with the increasing role of digital technology in human life and in order to support the development of technology as much as possible for the welfare of life.
It is noteworthy that the IOI is the largest annual international competition in the field of informatics and the most prestigious in the world.
IOI is held annually in one of the participating countries, with each country represented by four students and two supervisors.
The IOI competition aims to identify, encourage, challenge, and recognize young people who have great talents in the field of informatics. Then, build international friendships among scientists and educators in the field of informatics. The next goal is to introduce the discipline of informatics to young people, promote the organization of informatics competitions for high school students, and encourage countries to hold IOI competitions in the future.
Through IOI, young generations across countries can share inspiration and positive energy to recover and rise from the pandemic. In this way, the world’s digital talents can connect and collaborate.
About 349 students from Senior High School level coming from 89 countries and territories are participating in the International Competition. This number is the largest number of countries during the implementation of IOI.
The event was officially started on August 9 in Yogyakarta with the opening ceremony by Indonesian Education and Cultural Minister Nadim Makarim and the IOI President Benjamin Burton.

According to VNA, tran Xuan Bach, a 11th grader at the HUS High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University, won a gold medal at the competition.
The three silver medalists are all 12th grade students, including Duong Minh Khoi also from HUS High School for Gifted Students, Le Huu Nghia from Binh Long High School for Gifted Students in Binh Phuoc, and Truong Van Quoc Bao from Nghe An’s Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students.
Was held both in-person and virtually, the IOI 2022 presented 30 gold, 58 silver and 88 bronze medals. The Vietnamese contestants took part in the competition remotely from Vietnam.
With a gold and three silvers, Vietnam ranked ninth in the medal table, after China, Japan, the US, the Republic of Korea, Iran, Ukraine, Croatia and Taiwan (China).
Last month, all members of the Vietnamese team that competed at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2022 and the International Biology Olympiad 2022 (IBO 2022) pocketed medals.
