Japanese Association Supports Children with Disabilities in Ben Tre
The delegation of the Support of Vietnam Children Association (SVCA) led by its Chairman Shigeru Sekiya just had an information session about the working program of the delegation during its working time in Ben Tre province.

The delegation consists of 34 members from the groups of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, pediatricians, teachers for children with disabilities, developmental delays, Down's disease, hyperactivity, each group will work in its own field to support units of Ben Tre province.
General Secretary Akemi Bando said that during this visit to Ben Tre, the delegation will have activities to support the province such as: training support for physiotherapists and rehabilitation staff of Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital; training for medical staff on speech therapy after cleft lip and palate surgery; supporting the pediatric department in monitoring and taking care of premature babies, how to manage and monitor children through pink books and promote and replicate child management pink books to grassroots health units at district and commune levels; instructions on how to use the psychological test kit for children at the provincial school for raising children with disabilities.

According to Bando, the delegation will continue to survey and acknowledge the proposal of Ben Tre and accompany Ben Tre as well as continue to mobilize funding, provide financial and technical support, and replicate rehabilitation models, special education classes for children with disabilities go to more localities, creating conditions for more disabled children to receive rehabilitation treatment, go to school, and integrate into the community.
Chairman Sekiya shared his special feelings for Ben Tre province over the past time, as well as expressed his desire to continue to have connections and have more meaningful programs in the province.

The fulcrum of children with disabilities
Bando said that she visited Ben Tre for the first time on March 31, 1990. She visited the Department of Health, Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital, viewed documents on the effects of Agent Orange of the US military, visited four families with children with disabilities in Ben Tre. She wishes to have a site to build a school for students with disabilities.
When she returned to Japan, Bando and some members founded the Support of Vietnam Children Association. As the General Secretary, she, together with the members of the association, implemented programs and activities to help Vietnamese children in general and Ben Tre children in particular, participated in activities such as community-based rehabilitation in Ben Tre province.

In 1991, the association cooperated with Ben Tre province to build a school to raise children with disabilities, the first school for children with disabilities in Ben Tre. After that, she and the members of the Association continued to support equipment and facilities for the school, training knowledge and skills for school teachers in teaching and training for children with disabilities.
Over the past 30 years, Bando and the Support of Vietnam Children Association have organized and implemented many other support activities in the province. Since 1997, implementing a community-based rehabilitation program, in order to give people with disabilities the opportunity to recover, improve health, study and integrate into society, it has now covered all 164 communes and wards in the province.
Accordingly, the program has been invested in 51 physical therapy rooms by the Association in communes and wards with the goal of treating and restoring neuromuscular function for children with disabilities.
Since 1998, implementing a program of primary health care for mothers and children, aiming to reduce the number of children born with malformations, disabilities or mental retardation by taking care of mothers from the very beginning. from pregnancy to delivery, taking care of newborns from birth to full age through the Maternal and Child Health Monitoring Book. The association has helped Ben Tre province to create the Maternal and Child Health Book which all communes of Ben Tre province used in 2004.
By 2015, in response to the urgent needs of parents with children with disabilities, in caring for and teaching disabled children to integrate into the community, the association sponsored the establishment of a Support Center for children with disabilities. disabled children in Ben Tre province. The association's experts have been training and continue to act as advisors for the center to operate most effectively.
In addition, the association also supports other hospitals in the province with many medical equipment, and invests in funding to build a rehabilitation department to be able to practice rehabilitation for people with disabilities.
During the last visit and survey in Ben Tre in March 2023, the Support of Vietnam Children Association's delegation supported Ben Tre with USD 16,000 (more than VND 372 million) to implement the rehabilitation program. community-based function, supporting Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital to purchase equipment and tools for children with disabilities; supporting the Pediatrics Department of Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital in printing documents for premature babies.
