Atsushi Kamada, president of the Japan-Vietnam Exchange Association in Miyagi prefecture, visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan to present gifts supporting Vietnam in recovering from the consequences of Typhoon No. 3 (internationally known as Yagi), valued at JPY 1 million (approximately VND 170 million).

According to information posted in the embassy's website, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu expressed his deep gratitude for the special support from the Japan-Vietnam Exchange Association in Miyagi, especially as Vietnam continues to work hard to recover and rebuild after Typhoon No. 3.

The diplomat emphasized that both Vietnam and Japan, particularly Miyagi prefecture, face various natural disasters each year, such as earthquakes and floods, fostering a sense of empathy and timely support during difficult times.

For his part, President Kamada highlighted that the association's members were aware of the severe devastation caused by Typhoon No. 3 in northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam through media reports, and they agreed to join hands with the Vietnamese people to overcome the aftermath and quickly rebuild affected areas.

He also expressed hope that the exchange and cooperation between Miyagi prefecture and localities in Vietnam would continue to be strengthened, especially in the field of public health workforce development.

Last month, the Government of Japan has announced a USD-2 million contribution to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support Vietnam’s critical relief and early recovery efforts after Typhoon Yagi, according to the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam.

USD 1 million will cover essential water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and child protection services provided through UNICEF Viet Nam serving 21,251 people, and the other USD 1 million will go to IOM Vietnam to provide emergency shelter and non-food items support for more than 16,800 individuals in hardest hit provinces.

Mitsue Pembroke, Officer in Charge of IOM Vietnam said, “Through the Vietnam Disaster Risk Reduction Partnership together with provincial and local authorities and actors, IOM will ensure coordinated efforts to support the most vulnerable individuals displaced from their homes, especially the economically marginalized, women, girls and persons with disabilities.”
