A women's exchange event took place with the theme "Women: Stagnating or Breaking through?" was held in Tokyo on October 6 by the Vietnamese Professionals in Japan (VPJ) in coordination with FPT Japan Holdings (FJP).

This is a practical activity to celebrate Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20), attracting a large number of Vietnamese women living, working and studying in Japan to exchange and share knowledge, experience, secrets of success as well as balance between family and work.

The event gathered three main speakers included Nguyen Hoang Linh, deputy director of FPT Japan Holdings; Nguyen Thi Thu Nghia, former Research and Training Assistant at the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI); and Doan Phuong Thao, a consultant at the Kawasaki city Administration.

According to the representative of the organizing committee, this is an opportunity for Vietnamese women in Japan to interact with excellent speakers who have overcome difficulties and successfully broken through in their career journey as well as maintaining family happiness. In addition, the event also creates opportunities to expand relationships, contributing to building a Vietnamese community that supports each other in the working environment in Japan.

The speakers' speeches mainly focused on sharing their own lived experiences when working and developing their careers in Japan or the story of the decision to give up a potential hotel management position to pursue a career as a researcher with the desire to contribute to society.

In addition, the speakers also emphasized that Vietnamese women need to have the mindset to break stereotypes of women in the workplace and society, but still strive to ensure the role of wife and mother that has been the tradition of Vietnamese women for thousands of years.

Talking with VNA reporters in Tokyo, speaker Nguyen Hoang Linh said that women living in Vietnam have more favorable conditions to advance in their careers than in Japan, but recently, more and more large Japanese companies have appointed women to important management positions. This shows that Japanese society has gradually changed and it can be said that the "era of women in Japan" is coming.

Therefore, Vietnamese women in Japan have many opportunities to advance well in Japan. The basic characteristic of Vietnamese women starting a business in Japan is that they are fairly young, while the nature of their work often requires them to interact with older partners and customers. Therefore, with the experience of those who have gone before, Linh's advice is that women who are just starting a business must always be confident in themselves, gradually erasing the doubts of their partners by showing their best ability, enthusiasm and youth.

In the group discussion, the participants had the opportunity to share their personal experiences through everyday stories, thereby learning from each other about career development thinking as well as maintaining a happy family.

Trinh Le Thu Trang, a participant currently working in an office at a Japanese company, shared her frustration, thinking there is almost no opportunity for advancement, or in other words, she is currently stuck in one place.

However, through attending this event, Trang hopes to gain more confidence, look at the success of Vietnamese women in Japan to build a breakthrough plan for herself, dare to challenge herself such as striving for a higher position or developing in another direction.

VPJ was established in 2016 in order to connect the Vietnamese community and is a bridge to share experiences and career development opportunities, contributing to enhancing the value of the Vietnamese community in Japan. In recent years, VPJ has hosted or participated in organizing many events to help connect Vietnamese people in Japan, such as Vietnam Intellectual Forum in Japan 2019 and a seminar entitled "Career Sharing".

This gather is the third event in a series of VPJ community activities in 2024 with the expectation of creating a useful and practical playground, helping Vietnamese women have more choices and stronger determination to develop their careers and build family happiness in the journey to make a mark in Japan.
