On November 8, the Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka, in coordination with the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI), organized a workshop on the theme “Connecting Vietnam-Sri Lanka” in Kalutara. This event aimed to introduce Vietnam's potential and opportunities for investment, trade, and tourism cooperation to relevant agencies and Sri Lankan businesses.
Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam met and discussed with Chairman of the Sri Lanka Investment Council Arjuna Herath. |
Kalutara is one of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts, located 43 kilometers south of Colombo. It has strengths in agricultural production and processing, being renowned for mangosteen orchards and coconut-based products for both domestic and international trade, as well as coastal areas that support tourism.
Kalutara has developed a 2019-2030 Development Plan that includes several strategic projects, expected to drive robust growth across all local economic, cultural, and social sectors.
Participants at the workshop included Vietnamese Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam and Counselor Le Van Huong from the Embassy, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Investment, Arjuna Herath, and nearly 20 representatives from relevant agencies and businesses from Colombo and Kalutara.
During the workshop, the Embassy screened a video titled “Welcome to Vietnam,” which provided information on Vietnam’s socio-economic development, new policies, and the government's commitments to foreign businesses and investors, as well as priority areas for cooperation and investment in the current period.
In his presentation, Counselor Le Van Huong highlighted Vietnam's potential and strengths, including its recent economic achievements, expansion of international markets, participation in international economic organizations, and signing of 17 free trade agreements (FTAs) with key partners. He also shared information on various forms of business cooperation available in Vietnam.

In discussions with enterprises, Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam emphasized that, given the strategic geographic positions of Vietnam and Sri Lanka, there is significant potential for collaboration between the two countries. She stated that economic, trade, and investment cooperation could be elevated to match the longstanding, friendly relations between Vietnam and Sri Lanka. She suggested areas where cooperation could be promoted in the near future, including tourism, agriculture, fisheries, education, infrastructure development, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, logistics, and IT.
The Ambassador affirmed that the Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka is prepared to provide relevant information and support Sri Lankan businesses in connecting with Vietnamese agencies, organizations, and enterprises.
Arjuna Herath, Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, praised Vietnam’s recent economic achievements and expressed Sri Lanka's desire to strengthen economic, trade, and investment ties with Vietnam. He thanked the Embassy for organizing the workshop and for providing valuable information.

Chairman Herath noted that Sri Lanka currently has 15 economic zones, numerous international-standard seaports, free trade agreements with various countries and regions, and a skilled, well-trained labor force.
He shared that Sri Lanka is gradually recovering and stabilizing its macroeconomy with sustainable growth rates and controlled core inflation, which creates a favorable investment environment to attract foreign businesses. He invited Vietnamese enterprises to invest in Sri Lanka, particularly in the Kalutara region.
The workshop is one of several economic diplomacy activities recently promoted by the Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka.
Given the challenges Sri Lanka faces after recent crises and the limited trade between the two countries, enhancing exchanges, contacts, and information sharing with relevant agencies and Sri Lankan businesses can deepen mutual understanding and encourage exploring business opportunities. This foundation will support strengthening bilateral economic, trade, and investment cooperation, especially as Sri Lanka’s socio-economic conditions improve.
