This morning (October 11), Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai People's Committee Tran Phuoc Hien and the delegation approached the site of the landslide of Ka Tinh hydropower plant, Tra Bong district, causing 1 person to lose contact.

Preliminary reports show a mountain collapsed, which was said to bury a generator of the hydropower plant, said Dang Minh Thao, Secretary of the Tra Bong Party Committee, according to the VOV.

“We were trying to reach out to the scene, but darkness and heavy rain hampered rescue work,” said Thao.

Local media outlets reported it is difficult to locate the landslide in order to deploy rescue work due to heavy rain and a power outage at the scene.

At the scene, rock fell from the mountain to cover a large area, causing traffic jams. Currently, cars and motorbikes cannot pass through. Since last night, Tra Bong district has stretched a rope to ban vehicles from entering the landslide area. Tra Bong district mobilized 2 excavators to remove soil and rock to temporarily open the route and access the hydroelectric power plant.

Authorities of Tra Bong immediately directed relevant agencies to prepare a plan to approach the landslide area where a worker was suspected to be buried in debris.

“We have not been able to contact a worker of the working shift in charge of running the generator,” Thao told media workers.

Heavy rain hit Quang Ngai province, especially in mountainous districts, on October 9. Tra Bong district received the highest rainfall of between 200-400mm, with its Tra Hiep commune even recording rainfall up to more than 550mm.

Heavy rains caused floodwaters to rise quickly, cutting traffic routes and isolating many residential areas.
