Laos appreciates Vietnam’s support in Covid-19 battle

From May 11-15, the group shared experience in COVID-19 prevention and control with local agencies at villages reporting a large number of infections, along with quarantine sites, hospitals and testing units in the province.
Members also joined consultations regarding serious cases with their Lao counterparts and held seminars sharing experience in fighting the ravaging pandemic.

Speaking with the Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent, Dr. Panom Phongmany, Deputy Director of the Department of Health Promotion and Hygiene at the Lao Ministry of Health, spoke highly of experience and opinions put forth by Vietnamese experts over the past few days.
He added that support from Vietnamese medical experts proves effective in the efforts in the province and the country at large.
From May 16-20, the team will continue its tasks in central Savannakhet province before leaving for the Vientiane capital.
Previously, Lao Party General Secretary and State President Thongloun Sisoulith sent thanks to Vietnamese leaders for their messages of sympathy over the Covid-19 situation in Laos.
In a thank-you letter to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Thongloun Sisoulith said the Vietnamese leaders’ messages have vividly demonstrated the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

The Lao leader also highlighted Vietnam’s valuable, timely and effective support to Laos in personnel, medical supplies and medicines, saying the assistance has significantly contributed to the pandemic fight in his country.
“We always keep a close watch on the Covid-19 situation in Vietnam, and highly value the measures taken by the Vietnamese Party and government to contain the pandemic,” he said.
Vietnam is one of the countries that have reaped great successes in Covid-19 prevention and control which have been lauded by the international community, the Lao leader continued.
“We believe that under the leadership of the Community Party of Vietnam and with the great national unity bloc, Vietnam will beat Covid-19,” he said, pledging that Laos will closely cooperate with Vietnam to win over the pandemic.
Vietnam’s assistance for Laos in the Covid-19 combat was handed over at a ceremony held at Wattay International Airport in Vientiane capital city on May 4, according to Vietnamnet.

The support consisted of 500,000 USD in financial aid and medical supplies, including 2 million medical face masks, 200 ventilators, and 10 tonnes of the Chloramine B disinfectant.
Notably, the flight from Hanoi also carried 35 Vietnamese experts sent to help Laos in the fight.
On this occasion, the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations, the Vietnam - Laos Cooperation Committee, and the Government Office of Vietnam also presented the Laos partners with 50,000, 500,000, and 20,000 medical masks, respectively.
Congratulating Vietnam on the significant achievements in the Covid-19 fight, Lao Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune appreciated the precious assistance from the Vietnamese Party, State, and people to the Lao counterparts.
The Deputy PM, who is also head of Laos’ central committee for Covid-19 prevention and control, also stressed that Vietnam is the first country to provide financial, personnel, and material support for his country in the latest outbreak.
Also on May 4, the Van Lang education group of Vietnam delivered 100 ventilators to Laos, part of a program to provide medical supplies for Laos and Cambodia in the Covid-19 combat.
Another 800 ventilators will be sent to Cambodia in the time ahead, according to the Ministry of Health.
The ventilator production was funded by the Van Lang and Van Thinh Phat groups.
