Late Professor Jean Salmon, former Honorary President of the Centre of International Law under the Free University of Brussels, and former member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), has been awarded the Friendship Order of the Vietnamese State in recognition of his great contributions to the Vietnam-Belgium cooperation, especially in international law, VNA reported.
A hand-over ceremony was held by the Vietnamese Embassy in Belgium on October 4 with the participation of Ambassador of Vietnam to the Kingdom of Belgium, head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the European Union (EU) Nguyen Van Thao, officials of the Embassy and Vietnamese representative agencies in Belgium, along with Denise Mathy Salmon, the late Professor's wife and children, and a number of colleagues and close friends of the late Professor from the Center for International Law, Free University of Brussels.

Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao praised the late professor’s contributions to the bilateral cooperation, saying the order is to honor his tireless efforts in this regard.
The late professor’s wife Denise Mathy Salmon and his son Yvain Salmon thanked Vietnamese leaders and the embassy for their sentiments to Jean Salmon, saying it is their honour to receive order.
Yvain Salmon highlighted milestones in cooperation between his farther and Vietnamese government agencies.
Representatives of the colleagues where the Professor used to work affirmed that they will continue to implement the initiatives initiated by the Professor, together with colleagues and students of the late Professor Salmon, to make a substantial contribution to the Vietnam-Belgium relationship as the Professor wished.

Born on 4 March 1931 in Ixelles (Belgium), he received a doctorate from the Université libre de Bruxelles in 1954 and from the University of Paris in 1957. He then worked as Deputy Legal Advisor at the Relief and Works Agency of the United Nations (UNRWA) from 1958 to 1961.
He was Professor (since 1961), Emeritus Professor (1996) and Visiting Professor (2013) at the Université libre de Bruxelles. He held various positions within this University, in particular as Secretary of the Institute of European Studies (1963-1967), Director (1964-1996) and President (1996-2003) of the Center for International Law and President of the Faculty of Law (1977-1980). He has also taught at many other universities in various countries. Furthermore, he played a key role in various cooperation projects on scientific research, legal consultancy, and high-quality personnel training in Vietnam.
