At a reception for the UN Resident Coordinator in Hanoi on August 9, Lam noted that the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has always coordinates closely with UN agencies in crime prevention and control, gender equality promotion and security, even amid the Covid-19 spread.

The minister briefed the UN official on coordination between the ministry and UN Women in improving the leadership capacity for women and fighting violence against women, as well as the establishment of its relations with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in aviation security.

He said the ministry will officially send officers to UN peacekeeping activities this year, and will work to ensure the sex ratio among the officers as recommended by the UN, viewing the international mission as a regular, long-term task of the Vietnamese police force.

Lam suggested Tamesis to continue facilitating cooperation between UN agencies and the ministry, as well as the UN’s support to Vietnam in transnational crime combat in specific areas such as drug crime, corruption, human trafficking, money laundering and terrorism.

For her part, Pauline highly appreciated Vietnam's continued and increasing contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, including its first-ever deployment of an engineering unit and soon-to-be deployment of police forces to work on peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and the UN.

At the same time, she emphasized Vietnam's commitment to the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda.

The year 2022 marks 45 years of cooperation between Vietnam and the UN and the first year of implementing the Vietnam-UN One Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development Cooperation for 2022-2026.

The UN Resident Coordinator pledged to make every effort to promote the relations between the UN and Vietnam and the ministry in particular.

On July 13, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh hosted a reception in Hanoi for Tamesis, who came to present the UN Secretary-General's credentials, beginning her term of office in the country.

Tamesis expressed her honour to be the Resident Coordinator of the UN in Vietnam, praising Vietnam as a model for its dynamism and active contributions to the international community, as well as for cooperation between the UN and a developing nation.

This year marks the 45th year of cooperation between the UN and Vietnam, and it is also the first year to implement the Framework for Sustainable Development Cooperation between the two sides for 2022-2026, Ms Tamesis said.

She pledged to make efforts to coordinate UN organisations in order to help Vietnam in sustainable socio-economic development, post-pandemic recovery and the implementation of focal cooperation priorities between the UN and Vietnam.

Pauline Tamesis has more than 20 years of experience in international relations, development coordination, crisis and change management, which she has acquired while holding senior leadership positions at the UN across multiple regions.

She has most recently served as Resident Coordinator in Cambodia, where she effectively mobilized resources to respond to and recover better together from the Covid-19 pandemic while leading the development and implementation of transformational sustainable development policies.

Prior to that, she worked with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), including as Chief of Country Office Support and Quality Assurance in the Asia Pacific Regional Hub where while overseeing UNDP operations in 24 offices, she also led the design and implementation of innovative solutions to boost national programme delivery.

She also served as UNDP Country Director in Bangladesh during a complex transitional period, effectively leading the work of the office on delivering urban poverty reduction, social protection, renewable energy, sustainable cities and climate adaptation projects.

Tamesis holds a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from Georgetown University in the USA and a bachelor’s degree, with honours, in management economics from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.
