New Portuguese-Vietnamese Dictionary Published: "Three-in-One" Guide for Users

Those in need can use the Portuguese - Vietnamese Dictionary as a pocket textbook, look up vocabulary like a regular dictionary and refer to conversations according to each topic.

Dr. Nguyen Van Lang, chairman of the Vietnam - Brazil Friendship and Cooperation Association, introduced the "three in one" Portuguese - Vietnamese Dictionary at the launch ceremony on September 6 in Hanoi.

According to Lang, it took the association 12 years to turn the dictionary from an idea into a reality. The dictionary was born to meet the needs of many people who love and want Portuguese to be spread and used in Vietnam.

The difference between the Portuguese-Vietnamese Dictionary and the other publications used for teaching and learning Portuguese is its practicality and high applicability.

"The dictionary is the first useful and practical tool for teaching and spreading the Portuguese and Brazilian languages and culture in Vietnam. This is also a long-term contribution of the Vietnam - Brazil Friendship and Cooperation Association aims to enhance mutual understanding in history, politics, science and technology, culture, and sports between Vietnam and Brazil as well as between Vietnam and the community of Portuguese language countries in the world", said Dr. Nguyen Van Lang.

Ambassador of Brazil to Vietnam Marco Farani said that the dictionary is a bridge connecting Vietnam and Brazil and Portuguese-speaking countries in the world in terms of culture, commerce, and diplomacy, contributing to spreading the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries in general, and Brazilian culture in particular, in Vietnam.

Ambassador Marco Farani said he would bring this dictionary with him on his next trip to accompany a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Government to Brazil and send it to the Brazilian President.

The dictionary consists of three parts. Part one provides an overview of the phonological, morphological, and syntactic characteristics of Portuguese and the worldwide community of Portuguese-speaking countries. This section helps users have the most general knowledge about the typological features of Portuguese, a Roman language, Indo-European language family. On the other hand, the reader also gets an outline of the distribution of Portuguese-speaking countries in continents around the world.

Part two contains 17 communication topics related to family, education, health, restaurants and food, hotels, shopping and supermarket supplies, sports, culture and festivals, and transportation as well as vehicles, mass media, agriculture and industry, finance, international business and trade, national administration, nation and nationality, labor and profession. Accompanying these topics is the Portuguese - Vietnamese vocabulary system.

Topics are selected according to the principle of practical application for users. People who go to work or go sightseeing and travel can immediately apply the Spanish conversations, words, and phrases in each topic to real-life communication situations. Each topic is structured in a strict order, from dialogues related to the topic; common phrases used to look up and use; to vocabulary related to the topic; and general information related to that topic in Brazil and Portugal.

Part three is a basic Portuguese-Vietnamese vocabulary table with about 15,000 common words and phrases with necessary examples in accordance with the context of use. This section helps the users to look up and understand the meaning of the necessary words.

The Portuguese-Vietnamese Theme Dictionary is priced at VND 279.000 (USD 11,6), and is released at major bookstores and distribution agents to provide to customers in need. The Vietnam - Brazil Friendship and Cooperation Association will work with the National Office of Intellectual Property on copyright issues and supplement then complete the dictionary's content and publish the online version for free.
