The 9th forum of the 13th Vietnam Trade Union Congress was held on the afternoon of November 30 in Hanoi. The forum has the theme of improving the effectiveness of trade union external activities and promoting the role of industry unions participating in international integration.

This is also one of ten forums within the framework of the 13th Vietnam Trade Union Congress discussing basic and important issues of Vietnam Trade Unions.

Speaking at the forum, Tran Thanh Hai, standing vice president of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, said that in the current context of comprehensive international integration, trade union diplomacy plays an extremely important role.

Standing Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor emphasized that grassroots unions need to connect and develop relationships with new partners, and participate more responsibly in multilateral forums of regional and international trade unions.

Regarding human resources work, Tran Thanh Hai noted that trade union officials need to be aware of and effectively explain the issues of the Trade Union, and help the international community properly understand the Vietnam Trade Union as an organization with a rich history and identity of nearly 100 years.

Tran Thanh Hai also requested that the team of trade union officials working in foreign affairs need to be increasingly professional, brave and knowledgeable about the activities of the Vietnam Trade Union.

Sharing the same view, Do Tien Dung, vice president of the Vietnam Union of Agriculture and Rural Development, pointed out many challenges in implementing foreign affairs.

Foreign affairs work in general and people-to-people diplomacy work particularly have not met task requirements. The content and funding for foreign affairs work are still passive.

The forum attracted valuable comments on trade union external affairs.

The vice president of the Vietnam Union of Agriculture and Rural Development proposed that the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor should soon have a training plan for foreign affairs officers to improve professional capacity, creating more opportunities for them to participate in activities of international organizations with trade unions.

“It is recommended that the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor regularly organize professional training for officials working in foreign affairs, diversify forms of external information to serve the needs of the industry, direct activities to seek support and funding from international sources, and coordinate closely with specialized agencies in international cooperation," Dung said.

Mai Thanh Phuong, president of the Vietnam Railway Trade Union, said that officials working in foreign affairs need to pay attention to two necessary factors in the current context.

“First of all, it is necessary to increase awareness and political bravery of trade union foreign affairs workers. Besides, they need to be confident in using foreign languages, thereby helping to open up and approach problems more deeply and effectively," Mai Thanh Phuong said.
