ORBIS, Central Eye Hospital Fight Blindness in Vietnam

The Central Eye Hospital on March 18 signed a cooperation program agreement with ORBIS in activities to improve treatment capacity in ophthalmology and blindness prevention in Vietnam for 5 years from 2025 to 2030.
According to this cooperation program, the Central Eye Hospital and ORBIS set out five main goals consisting of improving the capacity to treat specialized eye diseases in children; training and supporting lower levels to build an effective network of eye care for children; enhancing capacity and facilities for training in ophthalmology practice at the Central Eye Hospital; strengthening cooperation in the field of community eye care and specialized eye care; cooperating in research and sharing experiences to help mobilize resources and advocate for policies in the field of blindness prevention in Vietnam.

In the immediate future, in 2025, ORBIS and the Central Eye Hospital will implement a number of specific activities such as supporting training and updating specialized treatment for two doctors of the Central Eye Hospital on glaucoma in children by international experts; applying AI in screening fundus images, diagnosing and detecting early diabetic retinopathy; connecting the Central Eye Hospital and the Central Endocrinology Hospital to have timely treatment plans, preventing complications of the fundus and other related diseases.
At the same time, supporting the improvement of staff capacity on issues of visual impairment, promoting activities of transferring ophthalmic techniques to lower levels, contributing to strengthening local blindness prevention and control activities.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Ngoc Dong, director of the Central Eye Hospital, acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts that ORBIS has made over the past decades to support and work closely with the Central Eye Hospital in particular and the Vietnamese eye sector in general in the work of preventing blindness, for the global vision goal, "the right to see", in Vietnam.
Pham Kim Ngoc, Chief Representative of ORBIS Office in Vietnam, expressed her hope that this cooperation program will bring practical results to improve the ophthalmological treatment capacity of the Central Eye Hospital, continue to mobilize social resources to contribute to reducing the rate of blindness in Vietnam in the coming time.
Founded in 1982, Orbis International is an international non-profit,non-governmental organisation dedicated to preserving eye sightworldwide through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, advocacy and partnerships with local health care organizations in an effort to eliminate avoidable blindness.
For over 30 years, ORBIS has been present in Vietnam, accompanying the Central Eye Hospital and the Ophthalmology sector in the fight against blindness, improving the examination and treatment capacity of many ophthalmologists in Vietnam, bringing light to tens of thousands of people.
