According to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, projects under the National Mine Action Program (Program 504) cover 74,000 hectares; those for socio-economic development, 300,000 hectares; and humanitarian demining projects, 111,240 hectares.

The most note-worthy non-refundable aid projects of foreign governments include two Japanese-funded mine clearance projects in the central provinces of Quang Tri and Ha Tinh, under which 3,240 hectares have been cleared, with funding of more than 5.5 million USD.

The Republic of Korea (RoK) has also provided 20 million USD in aid to support the removal of landmines and unexploded ordnance in Vietnam under a project in the central province of Quang Binh and Binh Dinh.

Many capacity building projects have been funded and given technical support by foreign non-governmental organizations from the United States, Norway, England, Germany and Australia.

Previously, the VNMAC had advised the Ministry of National Defense to successfully implement a project to make a map of land contaminated with bombs and mines in all of the 63 cities and provinces, which was released in March 2018.

The project has provided a basis for ministries, agencies and localities to outline strategies and prioritize resources for socio-economic development.

The center will further promote research and development activities, especially building processes, standards, and international cooperation in bomb and mine clearance, and complete the national database system, contributing to speeding up the work.

Around 800,000 tons of unexploded ordnance remain scattered across the country. Mines and bombs are still covering up to 6.1 million hectares or 18.82% of the national area, statistics show.

In some central provinces like Quang Binh, Binh Dinh, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Ngai, there are over 22,800 victims of landmines, of them 10,540 killed and 12,260 injured./.
