The Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad on behalf of the United States to work with communities and create lasting change, according to its website.

Volunteers work at the grassroots level to develop sustainable solutions that address challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development.

Since US President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 235,000 Americans of all ages have served in 141 countries worldwide.

Vietnam will be the 143rd country to host Peace Corps volunteers.

Vietnam's Vice Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc signed the signing of the implementing agreement between the Peace Corps and the Ministry in Hanoi on July 10 at a reception with US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink.

During US President Barack Obama’s trip to Vietnam in May 2016, Vietnam and the US had signed a framework agreement on the Peace Corps operation in Vietnam.

“After 5 years, the agreement has been officially signed today, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. This is a special event, contributing to the cooperation between Vietnam and the United States,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc emphasized.

After the agreement comes into effect, every year, the US will send 20 volunteers to teach English to Vietnam. It is expected that after one year of selection and training in culture, language, comprehensive skills, volunteers of the program will teach English at high schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh Minh City, then expanded their teaching at university level.

Peace Corps Director Jody K. Olsen will sign the implementing agreement when the original documents arrive from Hanoi.

Director Olsen attended a reception at the State Department on July 10 (local time) to celebrate the signing by Vietnam of the implementing agreement between the Peace Corps and the Ministry of Education and Training to officially establish the Peace Corps program in English education.

The event, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, included Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell from the US's side.

Vietnam's side included Ambassador to the US Ha Kim Ngoc and Deputy Chief of Mission Hoang Thi Thanh Nga.

“We are thrilled to be entering into this historic partnership,” said Director Olsen. “I am honored and deeply grateful to the people and Government of Vietnam for their willingness to open their hearts, schools and homes to Peace Corps volunteers. This program, with its emphasis on cross-cultural exchange and capacity building, will benefit the people of both countries for generations.”

Peace Corps Vietnam will focus on English education. After arrival in Vietnam, volunteers will undergo three months of comprehensive cultural, language and technical training before they are given their assignments to serve for two years. The first class of Peace Corps volunteers is scheduled to arrive in Vietmam in mid-2022 to complete their training and be ready to begin their service when the school year begins in early September.

“Peace Corps volunteers live and work alongside their neighbors, bringing people together in pursuit of peace and friendship,” said Director Olsen. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for our partners in Vietnam and the Peace Corps family.”
