[Photos] Illustration Exhibition Shows The Vibrant World of Feathered Friends
The event was part of a collaboration project between the UK children's literature development agency Pop Up Projects, Nha Nam Publishing House, and UK children's publisher "Simon & Schuster". After winning a nationwide competition, 15 finalists developed their drawings according to the story "Return of the Spoon-Billed Sandpiper" by Trang Nguyen.

According to Nha Nam Publishing House, this is a year-long collaboration with its British partners. The artworks are the results from a workshop between Vietnamese illustrators with British artists - Jan Fearnley and Jane Buckely.

The two-week picture book course took place in Hanoi in September 2023. After that, the artists joined a 3-week online consultation with the instructors to complere their artworks.
Illustrator Jan Fearnley, known for her 26 children's books, and Simon & Schuster's award-winning art director Jane Buckely are both the instructors and the judges of the final picture book for "Return of the Spoon-Billed Sandpiper".

Nha Nam Publisher's Head of Communication Desk believed this project provided a rare opportunity for local artists to not only improve their skills in illustration but also their confidence in art-making.

"After the workshop, the artists will not be skilled in painting, but they will write a story to make a completed picture book," said Nha Nam Publisher's Head of Communication Desk.

Each illustrator's artwork shows one part of that story. A total of 15 double-page spreads, presented sequentially, along with the text for those pages were displayed to the public.
Fifteen additional pictures, extracted from the sequence as stand-alone pieces, are also presented throughout the exhibition.

Before being displayed in Hanoi, the artworks exhibited in London, and Manchester. From November 24 - December 3, 2023, the exhibition was presented at the Royal Over-Seas League in London (UK). After the London exhibition, it was open for public viewing at Manchester School of Art's Vertical Gallery at Manchester Metropolitan University from December 11 to January 7.

"The Return of the Spoon-Billed Sandpiper" will be published by Nha Nam Publishing House, featuring the work of the winner among 15 illustrators in this exhibition. The author with the best work on teachers' evaluation guides will have the opportunity to work with Simon & Schuster on a new picture book project in 2024/2025.
