“On 11 April 2016, China, through diplomatic channel, notified us on its plan to adjust the amount of water discharge from Jinghong Hydropower Station at 1,200 m3/s from 11 to 20 April 2016 according to the upstream water amount and power supply requirements. From 21 April 2016 to the end of this dry season, the Station will continue to discharge water to Mekong River downstream.
According to relevant authorities, since China and Laos started discharging water from hydropower dams, the water level in Viet Nam’s Mekong Delta has increased, helping alleviate the drought and saltwater intrusion.
We highly appreciate the efforts by China, Laos and relevant countries towards sustainable use of Mekong River water resources and, thus, ensuring harmonized interests of relevant countries and the livelihood of people in the region.”
