Standing Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Pham Binh Minh met with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77) in New York on September 23.

The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77) opened on Tuesday, 13 September 2022 at the UN Headquarters in New York, in the first in-person format since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Heads of states and governments from 193 Member States will exchange statements in-person in the General Assembly Hall, on the theme “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”.

High-level events will include the annual Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Moment, the Transforming Education Summit, the commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, a high-level plenary to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, and several Member State and partner side events, including WHO sponsored events.

Meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, Minh congratulated Saleumxay Kommasith on his appointment as Deputy PM and FM of Laos, VNA reported.

Also, he expressed his hope that the Lao official will continue to instruct the implementation of high-ranking delegation exchange activities and bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and support ministries and localities in the realisation of high-level agreements between the two countries.

The two sides discussed the progress of the special solidarity between the two nations as well as the fruitful bilateral partnership over the years, and affirmed that they always put the Vietnam-Laos relations in top priority.

They showed a determination to effectively implement agreements reached by senior leaders of both countries and the outcomes of the 44th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee.

During the Laos-Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Year in 2022, they will continue to coordinate closely in organising delegation exchanges at all levels and conducting remaining activities.

The Vietnamese Deputy PM and his Laoian counterpart both agreed that they will work to hasten the progress of major cooperation projects, while strengthen their coordination and mutual support at international, regional and sub-regional forums.

This year is an important year for Vietnam and Laos when the two countries are celebrating the 60th founding anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic relations (1962-2022) and the 45th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (1977-2022). This is a historical event marking a milestone in the ties between the two countries' Parties, States and people.
The ongoing Vietnam-Laos Solidarity and Friendship Year is expected to give people of both countries and the international community a deeper insight into the uniqueness of the Vietnam-Laos ties, and inspire youngsters of both countries to inherit and promote the solidarity tradition built by older generations.

UNGA 77: Vietnam's strong support for and commitment to the UN's role reaffirmed

On the same day, Standing Deputy PM Minh met with UN Secretary-General Antonió Guterres at the sideline activities of of the UNGA 77's high-level week of in New York.

The Deputy PM reaffirmed with the UN Secretary-General that Vietnam's commitment to working with member countries and UN leaders to advance important common agendas, from the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals to peacekeeping operations in different regions of the world.

Vietnam is actively implementing its commitments at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) to net zero emissions by 2050, Minh stated, proposing the UN actively support the process of building the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

Vietnam has also paid special attention to international conventions on the protection and promotion of human rights. It is currently a party to 25 conventions of the International Labor Organisation (ILO) and by 2020, Vietnam was home to 43 organisations of 16 different religions.
