State President Luong Cuong reaffirmed that public health remains a cornerstone of Vietnam’s socio-economic development strategy. Speaking at a meeting with distinguished medical professionals in Hanoi on February 26, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Vietnamese Doctors’ Day (February 27, 1955 – 2025), he highlighted the nation’s achievements in healthcare.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan noted that Vietnam’s healthcare system has seen remarkable growth over the past seven decades, achieving nationwide coverage. By 2024, health insurance coverage had reached 94.2%, and the country now boasts over 13,000 healthcare facilities at all levels. The average life expectancy of Vietnamese citizens has risen to 74.5 years, making Vietnam one of the regional leaders in this metric.

During the meeting, President Cuong emphasized how the comprehensive medical network has enabled access to healthcare services for people across urban areas, remote regions, and mountainous terrains. He pointed out that vaccination campaigns and disease prevention initiatives have significantly improved public health and contributed to the rise in life expectancy. He also praised Vietnam’s integration of advanced medical technologies and successful treatments, such as organ transplants, which have placed the country as a regional leader in healthcare. Special recognition was given to healthcare workers for their heroic contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acknowledging these achievements as a source of national pride, the President expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Party and State to Vietnam’s medical professionals for their dedication and sacrifices.

Looking forward, the President urged the health sector to enhance universal healthcare access, ensuring that all citizens receive essential medical services regardless of their location. He called for increased investment in specialized healthcare, upgrades to central and provincial hospitals, and mastery of advanced medical technologies to bring Vietnam’s healthcare standards to an international level. He also highlighted the importance of accelerating digital transformation, expanding telemedicine services, and applying information technology to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and make healthcare more accessible for all citizens.

State President Luong Cuong emphasized the necessity of building a high-quality healthcare workforce, prioritizing improvements in training and fostering both professional expertise and ethical standards among doctors and medical staff. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that healthcare workers are not only highly skilled but also deeply committed and compassionate toward their patients.

The President called for policies to attract and retain medical professionals, while honoring their dedication and sacrifices, particularly those working in remote areas still facing numerous challenges and shortages.

He also underscored the critical need to strengthen preventive healthcare and disease control, proactively address emerging diseases, and safeguard public health under all circumstances.

Further emphasis was placed on advancing medical research, integrating modern technology, and combining modern and traditional medicines. The President also stressed the significance of international collaboration to adopt global medical advancements, enhance healthcare services, and boost the competitiveness of Vietnam’s healthcare system.

Expressing his expectations, President Cuong encouraged healthcare workers to be shining examples of continuous learning, striving to enhance their professional skills while upholding political integrity and ethical standards. He urged them to build on their achievements and fulfill their noble mission of protecting and improving the health of the people in the current era.

On this occasion, the President awarded the People's Doctor title to 46 outstanding healthcare professionals.
