On March 22, 2022, in Hanoi, the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association held the 7th Congress, term 2021 - 2026. The congress had the participation of nearly 150 delegates representing provinces/cities, units of the Association nationwide, intellectuals and businesses.

At the congress, the delegates listened to a report summarizing and evaluating the work of the Association in the sixth term (2015-2021), and on the people-to-people diplomacy activities, contributing to consolidating and strengthening the relationship between Vietnam and Japan.

The congress is held in the form of both face-to-face and online.

Vietnam-Japan relationship at its best ever

Speaking at the opening of the congress, To Huy Rua, president of the association for the sixth tenure said that the current relationship between Vietnam and Japan is the best it has ever been.

The two countries coordinate in international and regional forums, especially at the United Nations and ASEAN; strengthen economic linkages and sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Japan is home to a community of 450,000 Vietnamese people living and working. The number of Vietnamese trainees increased rapidly with more than 200,000 people, topping the number of trainees in Japan.

To Huy Rua, president of the association for the sixth tenure said that the Vietnam-Japan relationship is a genuine, sincere, transparent relationship.

"During the Covid-19 pandemic over the past two years, the Governments and peoples of the two countries have always supported each other. The Japanese government has donated to the Vietnamese people vaccines, machinery and medical supplies to prevent the pandemic. Vietnam also creates favorable conditions for Japanese citizens and businesses in Vietnam to maintain and develop production and business activities, ensure production and supply chains," said To Huy Rua.

Ambassador Yamada Takio said that the 6th Congress of the association was held in 2015, marking the 50th anniversary of the association's establishment. Since then, Japan-Vietnam relations have developed in fields such as politics, diplomacy, security and defense, economy and culture.

The Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association plays a great role, contributing to maintaining and strengthening the relationship between Japan and Vietnam.

2023 is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam. Ambassador Yamada Takio hoped that this event would become an opportunity to develop the relation between the two countries.

Strengthening comprehensive cooperation between two countries

Speaking at the congress, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Chairwoman of its Organization Commission Truong Thi Mai said the congress was held in the context of a well-developed, comprehensive and substantive Vietnam-Japan relationship.

Japan continues to be Vietnam's leading economic partner, the largest official development assistance (ODA) partner, the second largest foreign investor, and the third largest tourism partner.

Vietnam-Japan relation still has potentials and opportunities for development. This is a great achievement after the continuous efforts of the two countries over the years, including the contribution of the association.

Truong Thi Mai affirmed that the association has made important contributions to strengthening the friendship, mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples. It helps to develop the relationship between the two countries and effectively carrying out the foreign policy of the Party and State.

According to Truong Thi Mai, "The new term is the inheritance of contributions from many generations, officials and members of the association, contributing to the relations between Vietnam and Japan.

The association needs to continue to expand the network of partners, and improve the efficiency of cooperation between people's organizations of the two countries. This is to make the friendship between the organizations, localities and peoples of the two countries stronger."

Vietnam-Japan continue to be each other's strategic partners in the new era.

Truong Thi Mai believes that the leaders of the new term will continue to lead the association to achieve many successes, make practical contributions to the relationship between Vietnam and Japan.
