The Vietnamese Embassy in Japan held the 2023 Community New Year on January 15 to strengthen the cohesion of the Vietnamese community and bring a warm Spring atmosphere to overseas Vietnamese in this country.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Nguyen Duc Minh, Chargé d'affaires of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, reviewed some of the country's socioeconomic development achievements in the past year. He emphasized, in 2022, the world has witnessed a lot of great and complicated changes with many difficulties and challenges. In that context, with the spirit of solidarity, consensus, and efforts of the entire nation, Vietnam has made important and quite comprehensive achievements in many fields.

Regarding the Vietnam-Japan relationship, he said that last year, despite being heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between the two countries still "developed very strongly, firmly and substantively in aspects such as political governance, diplomacy, trade, investment, labor, and education." Last year, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had a very successful visit to Vietnam. In addition, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc also led a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend the national funeral of the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Nguyen Duc Minh emphasized that 2023 is an important year in Vietnam - Japan relations because this is the year the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations. The two sides have planned a lot of activities for the whole year of 2023 to celebrate this important event. The role of the Vietnamese community in Japan will be shown when implementing these activities.

On this occasion, he called on the Vietnamese community in Japan to continue to promote the good qualities of the Vietnamese people, uphold the spirit of solidarity and join hands to build the community. At the same time, he also wanted them to preserve and promote Vietnamese culture in the eyes of Japanese friends, actively participating in activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan relations. Not only that, they need to look to their homeland and promote their role as a bridge for the growing bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Son, Head of the Liaison Committee to establish the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Japan, said that in recent years, the Vietnamese community in Japan is constantly growing and has become the second-largest foreign community in Japan. In order to strengthen the cohesion and increase the strength of the community, the Liaison Committee has made efforts to put the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Japan into operation as soon as possible.

According to the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, in addition to the Association of Vietnamese in Japan and the Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in Japan (AVIJ), there are many other associations and groups of Vietnamese people in Japan such as the Vietnamese Academic Network Vietnam in Japan (VANJ), Association of Vietnamese Professionals in Japan (VPJ), Vietnamese Youth Association in Japan (VYSA), Vietnam Business Association in Japan (VJBA), Association Vietnamese Buddhists in Japan, and the Vietnam-Japan Sports and Cultural Exchange Association (FAVIJA). Not only that, there are also 21 Vietnamese associations and unions.

Nguyen Hong Son gave his take on the Viet community in Japan.

“Currently, in Japan, the Vietnamese community is in the process of moving towards the establishment of the Union of Associations, which includes all Vietnamese associations and groups in all localities. We realize that, when such an association is born, it will not only play the role of connecting, exchanging, and sharing information, it will also strengthen the Vietnamese community in Japan."
