The enduring gratitude for these nations, rooted in the difficult years of war, continues to be cherished and upheld by generations of Vietnamese leaders and citizens, and is being actively preserved and strengthened in this new era.
The relationships between Vietnam, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan are deeply rooted in traditional friendship built on mutual trust and respect. The Vietnamese people always remember with great appreciation the significant and invaluable support offered by the people of the former Soviet Union during the struggle for independence and the post-war reconstruction period. This profound friendship is reflected in the cherished memories of many Vietnamese students who once lived and studied in these countries, considering them a second home. These sincere sentiments form a solid foundation for the continued growth of Vietnam’s relationships with its traditional friends.
Since establishing diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1992, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan have regarded Vietnam as an important partner in Southeast Asia. Vietnam and these countries have maintained regular delegation exchanges, high-level contacts, and close coordination at multilateral forums and international organizations. Economic and trade cooperation has become increasingly vibrant.

With Belarus, the Communist Party of Vietnam maintains traditional ties with the Communist Party of Belarus and has also engaged with the "White Russia" Party. Recently, a delegation from the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus visited Vietnam to attend the 50th anniversary celebration of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025) – a historically significant event marking the glorious victory of the Vietnamese people in their struggle for independence and unity. The participation of the Belarusian delegation not only demonstrated their deep respect for Vietnam’s heroic history but also served as a vivid testament to the strong traditional friendship between the two nations. The two countries maintain an intergovernmental committee mechanism, with bilateral trade reaching approximately USD 100 million annually.
Despite geographic distance, Vietnam and Kazakhstan enjoy favorable conditions for strengthening bilateral relations. Both serve as gateways to the ASEAN and Central Asian regions, benefiting from opportunities under the Vietnam–Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Free Trade Agreement. Bilateral trade in 2024 reached USD 800 million. The two sides launched their first direct flight route in November 2022, and the number of Kazakhstani tourists visiting Vietnam has surged recently. In a congratulatory message marking the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's reunification, Kazakh Ambassador to Vietnam Kanat Tumysh expressed great pride in being born in 1975 – the year of Vietnam's unification – and shared his delight at Vietnam's dynamic progress. The ambassador expressed confidence that Vietnam's current reform efforts would yield positive results, propelling the nation into a new era of development.
Vietnam and Azerbaijan share a long-standing relationship, nurtured by President Ho Chi Minh and Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev, along with generations of leaders from both countries. The Communist Party of Vietnam enjoys strong relations with Azerbaijan’s ruling party. Bilateral trade in 2024 reached nearly USD 52 million.
On the occasion of Vietnam's 50th reunification anniversary, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Vietnam Shovgi Kamal Oglu Mehdizade shared with VNA (Vietnam News Agency) his joy at experiencing the vibrant atmosphere during this significant celebration. “I saw many people walking and taking photos in the streets, especially near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Many children wore shirts with the Vietnamese flag. At that moment, I wanted to go out and share in the pride and joy with the people,” he said.
Despite historical upheavals and geographical distance, Vietnam's traditional friendship and cooperation with former Soviet Union partners is rapidly advancing, bringing tangible benefits to the people. The sincere affection and unwavering support from these traditional friends serve as a powerful source of strength as Vietnam strides confidently into a new era of national growth.
