Iceland is often called the Land of Ice and Fire, according to Iceland Travel, a land where volcanoes and geothermal heat have made their mark on the landscape, along with the many glaciers and glacier lagoons, a land of pristine and unspoiled nature.

Iceland's glaciers and ice caps cover more than 10% of the country's landmass. As the glaciers melt, especially during the summer months, the outflow creates a network of river systems that convey debris and volcanic material from the glaciers to the sea.

When the rivers' flows slow down, sediment accumulates on the riverbed, creating little islands of dark volcanic sand that cause the rivers' courses to separate. Because the constantly shifting river systems can be many kilometers broad, these patterns can only be seen from above.

Glaciers, geothermal hot springs, amazing ice caves, breathtaking waterfalls, and black sand beaches make up Iceland's unique terrain. Its wonderfully diverse scenery is what draws visitors to this Nordic island nation, which is unquestionably one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet. Photo: Kevin Krautgartner

About Kevin Krautgartner

Kevin Krautgartner is a Wuppertal-based artist who was born and reared in Germany. He began studying digital photography during his design education, and it is now at the heart of his artistic practice.

Krautgartner's projects are based on airborne viewpoints, which he uses to rediscover and reinvent landscapes and habitats formed by nature in general, geological processes, and/or man-made buildings as massive "Found Art" pieces. His work, particularly in the case of geological circumstances that are mostly attributed to the Anthropocene, also touches on the present, socially relevant issues.

Krautgartner usually avoids using drones in his high-resolution images, instead claiming an authorial perspective with the help of other flying aircraft such as helicopters or small planes. The artist goes to a variety of nations on all continents in pursuit of hitherto found locales and photos.

The intensive accompaniment of the printing process using the highest quality materials and equipment is an integral part of his creative process in order to make the eminently important, differentiated, and difficult textures of the captured earth's surfaces, which are as much a part of his work, tangible for the viewer. Only via the tremendously high fidelity of the shown exhibits, which is attained in this fashion, do the forms and structures, which at first look appear rather abstract, reveal themselves to the recipient on a closer scrutiny as enormously detailed depictions of a familiar or alien environment.

Krautgartner's work has appeared in periodicals and illustrated books on a regular basis, in addition to national and international exhibitions. For his art, he has won numerous prizes, including the ADC Young Guns Award and the Epson International Pano Award.
