Tribute to Hero of Ships Without Numbers on National Day
The Command Board of Station 560, Regiment 451 led by Major Nguyen Bien, Station Political Commissar, on September 1 visited Hero of the People's Armed Forces Ho Dac Thanh at his home at ward 5, Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province.
Hero of the People's Armed Forces Ho Dac Thanh, former Captain of “ship without numbers” (alias Ship 41) three times transported weapons to Vung Ro Wharf in late 1964 and early 1965, providing weapons, food and medicines to supply the southern front. His actions contributed to the victory in completely liberating the South and reunifying the country in the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign in 1975.
Vung Ro Wharf is in Hoa Xuan Nam Commune, in the south central coastal province of Phu Yen, and is believed to be one of the most important wharves of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea. The wharf was later recognized as a national historic relic on June 18, 1997.

In a warm and friendly atmosphere, reviewing the heroic tradition of the Vietnamese Navy, the legend of the Ho Chi Minh trail at sea, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Ho Dac Thanh told officers and soldiers the historical stories, heroic memories that he and his crews overcame typhoons and strict blockades of the enemyn, promptly provided support for the South during the resistance war against the United States.
On behalf of officers and soldiers of Radar Station 560, Major Nguyen Bien expressed his respect and deep gratitude to the heroes of the people's armed forces and the generation of soldiers of the ships without numbers. Their sacrifice is the decisive factor in the victory of the resistance war against the US to unify the country.
The Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea was set up on October 23, 1961 to help with the transportation of weapons from the North to aid the southern liberation army.
During the resistance war against the US imperialists, the route was considered a “true legend” and a miracle of the Vietnamese nation, contributing to the 1975 spring victory.
To evade the enemies’ eyes and ears, most of the ships carrying weapons for the southern battlefield were disguised as fishing ships with non-fixed numbers and they constantly changed their routes. Hence the name “ships without numbers”.
