UK's weather forecast

Bitterly cold winds are predicted to sweep over the UK from a northwesterly direction when the bank holiday weekend arrives at the start of April, with temperatures as low as -3C. Temperatures are expected to plummet particularly in North West areas and Scotland. Central Scotland could shiver at -3C on Saturday, April 3, along with Liverpool and Manchester in the North West of England, according to WXCHARTS.

Southern regions and the northeast appear to average lows of 0C. In a separate snow probability chart, most of Britain appears covered with swirls of dark blue and white on Easter Sunday (April 4), suggesting wintry cold air could sweep the nation, with a 10 to 40 percent chance of snow falling in these regions.

According to Express, Brian Gaze, a forecaster at Weather Outlook, warned of "cold incursions" and snow hitting the UK towards the end of March and beginning of April.

His monthly forecast said: "Colder incursions become likely in the north and there is the possibility of sleet or snow at times, particularly over high ground."

"Close to average temperatures are forecast when taken over the period as a whole and in the south during drier spells it may feel quite warm. Mixed weather is expected, with showers or longer outbreaks of rain spreading across the whole of the country on occasion. Despite that drier periods are likely too, particularly later on."

BBC Weather's long-range forecast between Monday, March 29, and Sunday, April 4, predicted cold northwest winds at the start of April.

The forecast said: "For the final few days of March and start of April, including the Easter bank holiday weekend, the unsettled pattern is expected to continue. This is due to high-pressure building away to our southwest near the Azores and to the east from Turkey into Russia."

"As we are sat between these two high-pressure systems, lower pressure is expected for the UK and the storm track is likely to remain influential over Northwest Europe. This means it will likely continue to be wet and windy as weather fronts sweep in from the west or northwest."

"As such, western and northern areas will bear the brunt of the weather. Southern and eastern areas will run a bit drier, although not completely dry. Temperatures will also continue to be fairly changeable, fluctuating around the seasonal average as fronts come and go. Southwest winds associated with warm fronts will bring some milder days."

"Cooler northwest winds behind cold fronts will bring colder but drier weather."

The Met Office also predicted wintry conditions to strike as "short-lived colder interludes" may hit over Easter.

The forecast between Saturday, March 27 and Monday, April 5, said: "After a brief cold interlude on Friday, temperatures will recover on Saturday with further showers, wintry over high ground during the morning, and strong winds in northwestern areas."

"Elsewhere across the UK most areas becoming largely dry but often cloudy. Bands of rain are then likely to continue to move in from the northwest during this period, with the heaviest rain across northern and western parts of the UK."

"The best of any settled weather will be in southeastern areas, though rain could reach here at times. The strongest winds are likely to be across far northern and northwestern areas, with winds possibly being from fresh to strong across other parts too. Temperatures are expected to be near to or a little above average, although short-lived cooler interludes could occur."

On March 24

According to Weather Online, a weakening in the cold front brings cloud and some outbreaks of light rain too much of the Midlands, Wales, central southern and Southwest England on Wednesday. This will be slowly drifting into East Anglia and Southeast England during the day. Becoming brighter across northern England and the north and west of Wales. Sunny spells for much of Ireland and Scotland and feeling colder here. Showers will affect western Scotland and western Ireland, these heavy at times. Eastern Scotland and eastern Ireland should be dry with sunny spells. Highs at 8 to 10C for many, but 12C in the southeast.

Cloudy in the south with a little light rain or drizzle but brighter to the north with some showers for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and perhaps northern England. Blustery in the north, Met Office reported.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday

Rather cloudy Thursday, some rain. Much colder on Friday with frequent heavy showers, wintry in the northwest. Showers in the north Saturday, else fine with sunny spells. Less cold.

Europe's weather forecast

Dry and bright conditions extend through Portugal, Spain, the Balearic Islands, Corsica and Sardinia. Early showers fade over southern Italy and Sicily to leave a dry and sunny day here. Showery outbreaks of rain and sleet affect Greece and Turkey but with some sunny spells developing in between.

High pressure brings dry and settled conditions to much of Europe. France and the Low Countries see a dry and sunny day. Cloud thickens over Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia as a weak front brings patchy, light showers here. Dry and bright through Switzerland and Austria. Cloudy but dry for Hungary.

Dry with variable amounts of cloud over Denmark, the Baltic States and Finland on Tuesday. Dry and bright for much of Sweden. Westerly winds drive outbreaks of rain and sleet into western parts of Norway. Staying dry and generally bright to the southeast.

BBC Weather forecaster Chris Fawkes noted that sandstorms have begun developing in Northern Africa. He said these sandstorms will be blown into the Mediterranean and mix with heavy rain in the area. This will cause blood rain to fall which could cause disruption in some areas.

Mr Fawkes said: "We have got some sandstorms across northern Libya at the moment where we have got some strong winds. Those sandstorms are blowing dust into the Mediterranean so Crete and Cyprus are likely to see some hazy skies. With some showers working their way into these areas as we go through Tuesday we might even get something called blood rain. This is where the rain mixes with some of that dust and leaves dirty deposits on cars and things."

The BBC Weather forecaster added that eastern Europe can expect some unsettled weather in addition to this. He noted that there could also be outbreaks of snow in the higher regions. He said: "It is going to be another unsettled day on Tuesday, outbreaks of rain pretty widespread across Turkey, northern and central areas of Greece. It is still cold enough for a bit of snow in the mountains."

"There will continue to be some strong winds across the Balkans and it will be affecting eastern areas of Italy as well. Further north temperatures are still below par across much of the areas. There is a lot of clouds in the forecasts as well with some isolated light showers possible from that."

As the week continues the showers in east Europe will begin to ease. But the strong winds are set to remain. Across Europe, temperatures vary but centra and western Europe can expert the warmest days with Madrid seeing highs of 20C. The lowest temperature can be expected in Helsinki with a high of just 4 degrees Celsius
