UK's weather forecast

THE latest BBC weather forecasts shows a dramatic 15C temperature plunge across the UK following Friday's record-breaking temperatures which saw the third hottest day ever recorded.

The UK experienced its third hottest day on record yesterday, as temperatures reached 37.8C in Heathrow. However, the latest BBC weather forecast shows that the extreme heat will fall by as much as 15C today in a dramatic turnaround. Temperatures will remain warm, even reaching the mid-20s in south-eastern England, although parts of the UK will experience heavy rain and clouds.

BBC meteorologist Nick Miller explained on BBC Breakfast: "Yesterday was the third hottest day ever recorded in the UK. There was some extreme heat around."

He explained that temperatures today are "looking much cooler and fresher," with Heathrow dropping from 38C to 25C.

Met Office weather charts also show Birmingham falling from 35C to 20C - an incredible fall of 15C - and a drop from 34C to 21C in Sheffield.

Miller continued: "Temperatures today are 10C or more down across the UK, due to a weather front from Iceland pushing in.

"This cold front means cooler air has followed on behind, and so are starting the day across the western part of the UK with a lot of cloud and some rain."

He revealed that the Shetland Isles even has a weather warning for heavy rain this morning.

Miller said: "High teens to low 20s generally across the UK today, though mid-20s in the warmest parts across eastern and south-western England.

"As we look into tonight, some rain will end the day in Northern Ireland, and there are some more outbreaks of rain across much of northern England and Scotland.

"There will be outbreaks of rain initially on Sunday morning for Scotland and northern England.

"The odd one in Wales and southern England but there will also be a lot of dry and sunny weather here too.

"Temperatures will be much closer temperatures to our average for this time of year this weekend."

Outlook for next week

On Monday it is a similar forecast, likely to be a day of sunny spells and showers.

Temperatures could still be quite warm at the start of next week, with maximum temperatures of 24 to 25C forecast.

After Monday a more unsettled pattern of weather is expected to appear in the UK.

The Met Office forecast it will be wetter and windier from Tuesday into Wednesday, particularly in northern and western parts of the UK.

There could also potentially be some heavy outbreaks of rain over higher ground in some regions.

The Met Office will be keeping an eye on rainfall totals in case any weather warnings for rainfall need to be issued in the middle of the week.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to start settling from Thursday and towards the end of next week.

During the latter half of the week, temperatures could also be on the rise, potentially hitting the high 20s range as the weekend approaches.

Europe's weather forecast

BBC WEATHER forecast a massive cool down for most of Europe from this weekend following record high temperatures across the continent.

BBC meteorologist Ben Rich warned viewers that after a very hot Friday the weekend is going to bring quite a cool down to the northwest of Europe. He explained that frontal systems will be pushing in from the northwest. The winds behind those weather fronts will be pushing much fresher air in.

Mr Rich said: "Our frontal system will drift eastwards as we head into Saturday.

"There'll be a band of cloud and some showery rain.

"I think some hefty downpours will move towards the far southwest of Norway.

"Ahead of that there is still plenty of heat to be had."

He continued: "Cyprus and Turkey will be into the 30s and 40 Celsius.

"The odd showers will be drifting across the Balkans.

"Italy will be mainly fine at this stage, but the frontal system will just cause a few showers to break out across parts of eastern France and Switzerland.

"Down towards Iberia, there'll be another hot day on Saturday."

The weather presenter added: "There'll be a much much cooler one for the British Isles.

"It'll be 25 degrees in London, down from the middle 30s on Friday afternoon.

"That cooler air just continues to push in across the northwest as we head into Sunday."

Mr Rich told viewers: "A band of rain will be moving through into Scandinavia, parts of Germany and down into the Alps.

"Heavy thundery downpours and cooler fresher weather will be following on behind.

"Even Spain will be cooling off a little bit with Madrid at 34 degrees on Monday.

"But in London and Paris, temperatures are set to climb again as we head through next week.

"In Berlin, it's going to cool off a little bit as we head on through Monday while there is plenty of sunshine in the forecast for Athens."

On August 2

Another hot day to come across southern Spain and Portugal, again up to 40C for some areas. A fresh breeze continues around Biscay coasts, with a chance of local showers. Hot in the far south of France too, but much of France, the Low Countries and Germany will be fresher with a westerly breeze, sunshine and scattered showers.

A risk of thunderstorms breaking out widely across the Alps and northern ltaly, plus eastern Germany and the Czech Republic. The heat will be confined to the far east of Germany and Poland, where topping 30C. Generally dry across east and southeastern Europe. Chance of a thundery shower by afternoon in southern Greece.
