United Nations Staff Officer Training Course Held in Vietnam

Recently, Canadian Ambassador Shawn Steil and Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Binh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army co-chaired the opening ceremony of the United Nations staff officer training course at the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

A United Nations staff officer training course is held at the Hanoi-based Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations within the framework of Canada's Military Training and Cooperation Programme (MTCP), VNA reported.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Binh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA), and Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Shawn Steil co-chaired the opening ceremony on March 11.

This course is hosted jointly by Canada and Vietnam under the Canada's Military Training and Cooperation Programme (MTCP), represents the most significant collaboration to date, thereby strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Canada and international partners in the field of United Nations peacekeeping.

With the participation of 64 lecturers, coordinators, and officers, the course will equip the staff officers with professional knowledge and skills.

Participating in the course, Vietnamese and international students practice document drafting and combat planning skills according to the functions of each advisory agency at the Mission Command Headquarters based on realistic simulated situations, analyze and evaluate the situation, draft combat orders, and create combat plans; exercise on a compass on performing the duties of a UN Staff Officer; analyze and evaluate the mission situation; develop combat plans; drafting a comprehensive combat plan; draft and issue combat orders, coordinate and coordinate in performing advisory tasks at the Mission Headquarters.

It is also set to raise Vietnam’s capacity for organizing intensive international training courses on UN peacekeeping operations and developing a contingent of UN peacekeeping lecturers, and strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Canada and international partners in this regard.

In his remarks, Binh highlighted the whole-hearted, valuable support from Canada to Vietnam in the preparation and deployment of forces for UN peacekeeping operations over the past 10 years, especially in training.

This is the first training of its kind co-organized by Vietnam and Canada, and the fourth intensive international training course on UN peacekeeping jointly held in Vietnam by the two countries in the context of Vietnam's increasingly extensive participation in United Nations peacekeeping activities, he added.

For his part, Steil emphasized the Vietnam-Canada cooperation in peacekeeping with the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2023, saying the course further demonstrates their growing collaboration in this field.

"The shared values and priorities of Canada and Vietnam, including those related to peace support activities and the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, serve as a strong foundation for future cooperation and exchange activities under the Indo-Pacific Strategy Cooperation and Training and Support Program," Ambassador Steil affirmed.
