At a regular press conference on August 6 in Hanoi, Hang explained that Vietnam and the US on July 10 officially signed an agreement on English teaching of the Peace Corps programme based on the Vietnam-US framework agreement signed in 2016.
The agreement prescribes the scope of cooperation, the number of volunteers to be sent to Vietnam in the first two years, the type of educational institutions where the volunteers will work, and their activities, she added.
It is among the important activities marking the 25th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic ties, Hang stressed.
The Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad on behalf of the United States to work with communities and create lasting change, according to its website.
Volunteers work at the grassroots level to develop sustainable solutions that address challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development.
Since US President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 235,000 Americans of all ages have served in 141 countries worldwide.
Vietnam will be the 143rd country to host Peace Corps volunteers.
Vietnam's Vice Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc signed the signing of the implementing agreement between the Peace Corps and the Ministry in Hanoi in July at a reception with US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink.
During then-US President Barack Obama’s trip to Vietnam in May 2016, Vietnam and the US had signed a framework agreement on the Peace Corps operation in Vietnam.

“After 5 years, the agreement has been officially signed today, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. This is a special event, contributing to the cooperation between Vietnam and the United States,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc emphasized.
After the agreement comes into effect, every year, the US will send 20 volunteers to teach English to Vietnam. It is expected that after one year of selection and training in culture, language, comprehensive skills, volunteers of the program will teach English at high schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, then expanded their teaching at university level.
Peace Corps Vietnam will focus on English education. After arrival in Vietnam, volunteers will undergo three months of comprehensive cultural, language and technical training before they are given their assignments to serve for two years. The first class of Peace Corps volunteers is scheduled to arrive in Vietmam in mid-2022 to complete their training and be ready to begin their service when the school year begins in early September./.
