Vietnam and Chile Celebrate 50 Years of Amicable Diplomacy

In Hanoi, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Chile (March 25, 1971 - March 25, 2021), on December 20, 2021.
Solid foundation from the past
Speaking at the celebration, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, president of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations mentioned the Vietnam-Chile Friendship and Cooperation Association, to express the solidarity and support of the Vietnamese people for the Chilean people against the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

The history of Vietnam-Chile relations had another memorable mark in September 1969, when former Chilean President Salvador Allende made a visit to Vietnam, together with President Ho Chi Minh laid the foundation for the solidarity and cooperation between the two countries. At that time, Chile became the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam on March 25, 1971. That is the priceless legacy that the two leaders have left to the two countries, opening a new period in the history of Vietnam-Chile relations. In 2007, Vietnam and Chile officially became each other's comprehensive partners.
"President Ho Chi Minh's imprints on Chile such as his monument in Cerro Navio, his photo at the desk of former President Salvador are proof that President Ho Chi Minh's image and thoughts are a bridge of friendship connecting Vietnam and Chile," said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, President of VUFO.

Cultivate and deepen the bilateral relationship
At the celebration, Chilean Ambassador to Vietnam Patricio Becker expressed his delight at the achievements that the two sides have achieved over the past 50 years. The Ambassador affirmed that the support and solidarity of the people of Vietnam and Chile during the previous difficult times and the past half century will continue to be nurtured and promoted by the two peoples. The good traditional friendship is a solid foundation for the two countries to constantly deepen the bilateral relationship.

Patricio Becker said: “The two countries share a common vision on issues such as opening markets, belief in multilateralism to move forward, promoting sustainable growth and the fight against climate change. All of that, together with a strong belief in internationally recognized rights, are key to maintaining peace and stability.”
Do Hong Viet, assistant to the Foreign Minister, assessed the 50-year journey of cooperation and mutual assistance in fields between Vietnam and Chile as a special, important and proud mark.

"The relationship between the two peoples has had a solid foundation previously from the strong protest movement against the Vietnam War in Chile. The two sides have practical mutual assistance activities to deal with the pandemic, demonstrating the solidarity and friendship between the two peoples. It can be said that the feelings of solidarity, friendship, and sympathy between the two peoples are the foundation and starting point, the glue that binds the close friendship and partnership between the two countries Vietnam-Chile," said Do Hong Viet.
With the great achievements achieved in the past half century, the friendship between the two peoples, the good relations between Vietnam and Chile in the coming time will continue to be cultivated, and strengthened. It meets the aspirations of the two peoples, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the region and in the world.
