Ambassador, Head of the Vietnam Delegation to the European Union (EU) Nguyen Van Thao had a meeting with Janusz Wojciechowski, EU commissioner for Agriculture |
On June 1st, Ambassador and Head of the Vietnam Delegation to the European Union (EU) Nguyen Van Thao had a meeting with Janusz Wojciechowski, EU commissioner for Agriculture to discuss strengthening agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and the EU.
During the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao said that the Vietnam-EU Comprehensive Partnership is developing well, creating a solid cooperation framework with important cooperation agreements.
The Ambassador said agricultural cooperation has an important role. It is one of the pillars of the relationship between Vietnam and the EU, especially when the world and the region are facing the challenge of food security.
Vietnam and the EU have great potential for agricultural cooperation because the EU is strengthening strategic autonomy, diversifying supplies, and ensuring food security. Vietnam has great potential in agriculture, has great advantages from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao suggested that the EU increase its sharing of information and experiences, support Vietnam in building green, modern and effective agricultural policies and models.
The Ambassador wants the EU to increase investment in Vietnam in high-tech agriculture, smart agriculture, and agricultural processing for export.
Nguyen Van Thao also suggested that the EU support Vietnam in adapting and minimizing the impacts of climate change on agricultural activities, supporting the commitments on emission reduction, environmental protection, especially commitment at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

EU Commissioner for Agriculture Wojciechowski appreciated the role and position of Vietnam, as well as Vietnam-EU relations. The fact that Vietnam is the first developing country to sign a new generation free trade agreement with the EU shows that the EU values and appreciates Vietnam's potential.
In the agricultural sector, he said that the EU considers Vietnam an important partner and has great potential for expanding cooperation.
Wojciechowski will lead the EU delegation working in the agricultural sector to visit Vietnam to seek opportunities and foster Vietnam-EU agricultural cooperation.
Commissioner Wojciechowski said the EU is currently interested in the agricultural sector. They worry that with the world and the region changing strongly, the EU and the world will face the risk of supply chain breakdown, especially raw material shortage, and food security problem.
Therefore, the EU is working to strengthen a modern, environmentally friendly agricultural policy, in line with the European Green Deal. The EU also fosters international cooperation to enhance strategic autonomy and diversify supply chains.
The EU attaches great importance to supporting small-scale agricultural producers, as this is an important force, accounting for only 21% of agricultural land but producing 35% of the world output, making a great contribution to a sustainable global supply chain.
Wojciechowski supported the agricultural cooperation proposals raised by Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao, especially assisting Vietnam in building a modern agricultural model, transferring advanced production technology, clean/organic production for small and medium-sized agricultural producers.
The two sides need to work closely to strengthen trade in agricultural products. The EU is also ready to assist Vietnam in responding to climate change in agriculture, reduce emissions, protect the environment, and achieve set goals, as these are issues that need cooperation at a global level.
The EU Commissioner for Agriculture hopes his upcoming visit to Vietnam will discuss concrete measures to enhance substantive agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and the EU.
