In its inaugural edition, the Busan International Children's Book Fair (BICBF) will host 193 publishers and 118 writers and critics from across the globe. Unlike other international book fairs that emphasize copyright exchanges, this event is designed as a book festival centered around children.
The theme for this year is "Laputa," inspired by the magical island in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels - a symbol of imagination and adventure.
The Fair will feature over 150 programs, including book exhibitions, exchanges, seminars, and interactive workshops, aimed at engaging audiences of all ages through storytelling and unique artistic content. Children will have the opportunity to meet authors, listen to stories, participate in craft workshops, and more.
Kim Ji-eun, children's book critic and exhibition curator, emphasizes the importance of interacting with books and stimulating all the senses through this exhibition. Additionally, book-themed programs and exhibitions will be held at the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art, the Hyundai Children's Book and Art Museum, and the Busan Library during this period.
The Korea Publishers Association (KPA), which organizes the event and operates the annual Seoul International Book Fair, views the Busan International Children's Book Fair as a "golden opportunity" to elevate the global status of Korean children's literature and facilitate exchanges among children's bookmakers worldwide. The BICBF organizers shared, "Books are the vehicles for dreams, the blueprints for new worlds. Children's books from all over the world will converge here. This is a Laputa for both children and adults, a place to share, enjoy, and find ways to realize dreams."
The Vietnamese book booth showcases a diverse collection from five publishers: Kim Dong Publishing House, Tre (Youth) Publishing House, Phu Nu Publishing House, Nha Nam, and Thai Ha Books. With over 50 books on display, it highlights the wide range of topics and genres in Vietnamese children's literature. One of the highlights is the introduction of the fantasy novel Lam Bao - Origin of Ashes by Kim Dong Publishing House, featuring the authors Tung Phan and Chi Vu. This novel is the latest addition to their fantasy series.
