Vietnam has joined 31 other countries and territories worldwide in the recent 34th Chinese Hong Kong Book Fair, whose theme spotlights literature in film and television, VNA reported.
The fair attracted 760 exhibitors from 31 countries and regions around the world such as mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan (China) and Argentina, France, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, etc. with more than 600 cultural activities.
The theme of this year's fair is "Literature, Film and Television", focusing on promoting literary adaptations, film and television works, television scripts, film culture and a variety of books suitable for many readers.

At the fair, the Consulate General of Vietnam designed a space rich in cinematic elements, showcasing classic and contemporary Vietnamese literary works that have been adapted into films or translated into multiple languages. The Vietnamese booth also features books highlighting the nation's culture, arts, tourism, and cuisine, including English and Chinese versions of Vietnam Pictorial published by the VNA.
Within the Vietnam Space at the fair, the Consulate General created a display area featuring historical books and those representing Vietnamese culture and arts, aiming to introduce and promote the Southeast Asian nation’s images to local and international visitors.

Talking to the VNA's resident reporters, Vietnamese Consul General Le Duc Hanh shared that reading culture is one of the easiest things to share between countries and peoples, making each of us closer, more connected and more understanding of each other, and cinema is no exception. This year's book fair with the theme "Literature, Cinema and Television" is a great opportunity for the Vietnamese Consulate General to introduce the image of the country, literature, as well as Vietnamese cinema to readers in Hong Kong and the world.
Through the annual book fair, the Vietnamese Consulate General will try to introduce Vietnam closer to the world, thereby implementing the Party and State's policy on cultural diplomacy, Hanh added.

The booth of the Consulate General of Vietnam displays a variety of publications, from classical poems in Quoc Ngu (writing system used for the Vietnamese language), Nom (script formerly used in Vietnam), English/French such as Truyen Kieu (Kieu Story), Luc Van Tien (The Tale of Luc Van Tien), to outstanding pre-revolutionary literary works that have been made into films by famous authors such as Nam Cao, Nguyen Cong Hoan, Ngo Tat To, Vu Trong Phung, Nguyen Hong with classic works and films such as Lang Vu Dai ngay ay (The Old Days of Vu Dai Village) and film works adapted from literature of the same name such as A Phu and His Wife, to name a few.

In the Vietnam Space at the book fair, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Hong Kong also has a corner displaying historical books and books symbolizing culture and art to introduce and promote the image of Vietnam to Hong Kong and international friends, serving as a cultural bridge, helping international readers explore more deeply about the soul, life and culture Vietnam through meaningful stories, overcoming all language and cultural barriers such as the book "Ho Chi Minh with Guangdong - Hong Kong" in Quoc Ngu and Han characters.
A special feature of this year's book fair is that the organizing committee also brought works that bring about the exchange and connection of Vietnamese culture with Hong Kong and the world such as the book "The Lover" (L'amant), a literary version and a film version, in which Vietnam during the French colonial period appears vividly and attracts viewers through the romantic but tragic love story between a French girl and a Chinese man, painting an dramatic picture of Vietnamese society during the French colonial period.
"The Lover" has also contributed to promoting Vietnam tourism and attracting the world's attention to Vietnamese culture and history. In particular, the movie version of “The Lover” starring Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-Hye is a favorite of many fans around the world and has become an unforgettable memory for the general public.
The organizers also introduced two special books in Vietnamese-English versions, “Dang Thuy Tram’s Diary” and “Perfect Spy.”

Meer So, a Hong Kong resident, shared that he was particularly attracted to the impressive and diverse display of books on the theme of Vietnamese literature this year. He's especially impressed by the works of writers Nguyen Du and Ngo Tat To, which inspired him to continue exploring the beauty of Vietnamese literature.
Meanwhile, Cecilia Tsu, a Hong Kong resident, said that she once visited Hanoi with her mother and felt that this city was full of life, and she also had the opportunity to meet the friendly people here. She stressed that Vietnamese food is very delicious, the ingredients are not too complicated but still make the dishes irresistible, such as Pho and egg coffee.
She hopes to have the opportunity to travel to Ha Long Bay because she has learned a lot about this scenic spot through travel agencies.

The 2024 Hong Kong Book Fair is not only a place to exchange and display works, but also an opportunity for cultures to interact and spread good values through literature and cinema. The presence of Vietnamese literature at this event has contributed to affirming the position and appeal of Vietnamese culture in the international arena in general and Hong Kong in particular.
In addition to helping visitors discover the joy of reading as well as the unique appeal of Hong Kong literature, cinema and television through its theme, the Hong Kong Book Fair is also an opportunity to promote the culture and tourism of Hong Kong and other countries.
The 2024 Hong Kong Book Fair attracted nearly one million visitors over 7 consecutive days.
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) commissioned a research institute to interview more than 820 visitors over the Book Fair period, providing an in-depth analysis of booklovers’ reading habits and spending preferences. The survey showed that the most popular book categories among readers were fiction and novels (47%), comics (21%), children and youth-related books (19%), travel (18%), and literature (16%).
The main reasons for people visiting the book fair were to purchase newly released books (55%), enjoy discounts when buying books (53%) and to experience the cultural atmosphere at an international book fair (30%).
