The Vietnam-Cambodia border is the border between the two countries determined on the basis of cooperation, respecting each other's independence, sovereignty, creatively applying principles of international law and practice.
Success for both countries
Through many different regimes, border issues have always attracted the attention of the people of the two countries, from border planning, demarcation and marking, building border maps, and other issues in border management.
The planning and completion of 84% of the border demarcation is a common victory for both countries.
The greatest significance of the 1983, 1985, 2005 and 2019 border treaties was that the two sides clearly demonstrated the determination of the two states of Vietnam and Cambodia to settle the outstanding border and territorial issues between the two countries by peaceful negotiation. At the same time, the treaties foiled the hostile forces' plot to destroy the solidarity between the two peoples, demanding the abolition of the treaties and border agreements signed between the two countries in the 80s of the last century.
The completion of 84% of border demarcation and marking has reaffirmed the validity and inheritance of the signed border treaties, meeting the concerns of the local authorities and people of the two countries.
The two countries strive to soon complete the entire border demarcation, to build a border of friendship, peace, and cooperation for mutual development between the two peoples.
Promoting cooperation
The border along rivers and streams since the French colonial period was adjusted to follow the median line of the navigable river, or the median line of the main channel for ships traveling with navigable rivers (thalweg principle), helped the people of the two countries have equal access to domestic water sources.

Resolving border issues, especially border-gate areas, has contributed to promoting the development of trade, cultural, scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries.
The completion of 84% of demarcation and marking has really brought legal documents on border management into the politics of the two countries. This is a victory for both sides, continuing to elevate Vietnam-Cambodia relations to a new height.
The complete settlement of the Vietnam-Cambodia border will contribute to creating a stable and developing environment for the border area, facilitating the implementation of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam development triangle area. At the same time, it also helps in the implementation of sub-regional and ASEAN development cooperation programs, contributing to safeguarding peace, stability and development in the region.
In 2020, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has completed a set of topographic maps of the Vietnam-Cambodia land border at the scale of 1:25,000. This is a legal-technical document, fully showing the results of demarcation, and is an integral part of the Protocol on demarcation and marking of land borders between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Kingdom of Cambodia signed on October 5, 2019. |
