Switzerland to send experts to deal with typhoon Yagi aftermath in Vietnam

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) announced on September 12 that it will send six experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit and provide 1 million Swiss francs to support those affected by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam.

According to the announcement, the experts, including specialists in water and sanitation, emergency shelter, and disaster risk reduction, will assist the Vietnamese government in assessing needs and developing short-term and medium-term response strategies.

SDC is also preparing to send relief supplies, including 300 family tents and two water distribution systems capable of serving 10,000 people. In the near future, it will also coordinate with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to transfer Swiss-funded essential goods to affected areas.

Additionally, SDC has allocated 1 million Swiss francs to support those affected by the storm and flooding, cited VOV.

SDC noted that the evacuation of people and other preventive measures undertaken by the government have helped minimize casualties. However, thousands of people have been displaced, and hundreds are reported dead or missing.

This is a concrete effort by Switzerland for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF), which has already disbursed funds to support relief activities. According to assessments, Vietnam is a priority country for the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), which is currently reviewing the reallocation of some activities to address emerging needs from disasters.

Typhoon Yagi accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds pounded Asia last week, causing widespread devastation in the Philippines, China, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, the typhoon and subsequent flash floods and landslides have wrought havoc across northern localities. The government of Vietnam has issued an international appeal for assistance.

Vietnam, China cooperate in natural disaster response

Vietnam and China have cooperated in natural disaster prevention, control, and mitigation as Typhoon Yagi scythed through a number of their cities and provinces, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on September 13.

Speaking at a regular press conference of the ministry, Mao elaborated that the hydrometeorological station of Vietnam’s Lao Cai province has provided rainfall data for Hekou Yao autonomous county of China’s Yunnan province, according to VNA.

Meanwhile, the China Meteorological Administration urgently collected and provided hydrometeorological information in the China - Vietnam border area to the Vietnamese side to strongly support flood prevention and relief efforts by both countries, she continued.

The spokesperson described the cooperation as a vivid demonstration of Vietnam and China being friendly neighbors that support each other, saying it also holds importance to building a China - Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance.

Vietnam - RoK trade exchange promotes business connectivity

Northern Vietnam experiences unprecedented consequences of typhoon Yagi

Massive flooding and landslides triggered by typhoon Yagi have caused devastating consequences in Northern Vietnam over the past days.

While mountainous provinces such as Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh reported deadly landslides, leaving at least 120 people dead and missing, many parts of other low-lying localities in the Red River Delta like Ha Noi, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, and Hai Duong are still facing severe inundation due to high flood water levels in northern rivers.

Flood water level in Cau River in Bac Ninh province reached 7.79m on Thursday night, or 1.49m above the Alert level 3, and just 5cm compared to the record water level in 1971. It is forecast that the Cau River's water level will recede slowly but remains above the Alert level 3.

Flood water level in Hoang Long River in Ninh Binh province rose to 4.88m, or 0.88m above the Alert level 3 as of 1 a.m this morning. The water level recedes slowly and remains above the Alert level 3, VGP reported.

Several localities in the Red River Delta are to face inundation over the next days as flood water levels in Northern mountainous provinces remain high.

Flood water levels in Thuong River and Luc Nam River in Bac Giang province reached 7.06m and 6.32m, respectively, all above the Alert level 3.

Flood water level in Red River in Ha Noi reached 10.05m, or 45cm below the Alert level 2 and is expected to gradually decrease to below the Alert level 1.

This is the first time flood water in Ha Noi rose to record high in 20 years while flood water level in Thao River's surpassed the record level in 1968.

Given the above situation, inundation will continue over the next days in Ha Noi, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, and Hai Duong, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

High flood water levels may pose risks of landslides and collapses of dykes in Ha Noi, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Hung Yen, and Ninh Binh.

The National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said heavy rain is anticipated in several northern localities on Friday evening.

Regarding human losses, at least 330 people have been killed and missing in Vietnam in the aftermath of the typhoon, the strongest storm in the East Sea over the last three decades.

Around 6.1 million customers experienced power outages due to the impacts of the storm.

At least 140,000 houses were damaged and 130,000 people had to evacuate to safe places.
