Vietnam Pledges to Raise Position in Global Innovation Rankings

On the afternoon of October 10, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Science and Technology coordinated with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Vietnam Permanent Delegation to the United Nations to organize a workshop introducing the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023 and Vietnam's results.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy said that recently, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced the Global Innovation Index 2023 - GII.
Accordingly, Vietnam ranked 46/132 countries and economies, up two places compared to 2022. Vietnam is also considered one of the seven middle-income countries that made the most progress in innovation over the past decade.
Regarding the innovation index, the GII 2023 shows that Vietnam increased two places compared to 2022, from position 59 to 57.
Vietnam's innovation output increased one place compared to 2022, from position 41 to 40. In the ASEAN region, Vietnam ranked behind Singapore (ranked 5th), Malaysia (ranked 36th) and Thailand (ranked 43rd).
Deputy Minister Bui The Duy said that the Global Innovation Index helped provinces and cities nationwide clearly see aspects to develop innovation ecosystems and the economy.
Some innovation indexes maintained increases. Typically, the index on the number of production software applications, related to mobile applications thanks to digital technology development, has a high value score of 82.6 points, ranked 8th.
Creative innovation in the cultural industry with contributions related to works, creative products, clips posted and spread on social networks also helps define the value of Vietnamese creativity.

Deputy Minister Bui The Duy expressed hope that with the support of experts from the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Ministry will work with units to evaluate the level of innovation. They will create a set of tools to assess what innovation is needed, especially for provinces, cities and localities to have the right direction and focus, contributing to raising Vietnam's ranking in the global innovation index.
According to Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, Vietnam's results in the Global Innovation Index 2023 are remarkable but also pose huge challenges for Vietnam, especially in the context of many uncertainties, major political and economic changes in the world.
Along with that, adjustments to trade strategies are taking place in many countries and continents. Therefore, there needs to be a solution to promote Vietnam's great potential as well as technology transfer and application of innovation in developing Vietnamese quality goods and service brands. This requires efforts from all levels and sectors across the country in innovation and application of science and technology, especially efforts from localities, scientists, and the private sector.
Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai affirmed that the Permanent Delegation to the United Nations always supports, connects, cooperates bilaterally and multilaterally with the World Intellectual Property Organization and organizations in innovation, technology transfer, product and service development, contributing to our country's sustainable development.
At the conference, Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, senior expert at WIPO, co-editor of the Global Innovation Index, shared some specific results of the report in 2023 and some problems that Vietnam faces.
