The event took place amid the growing number of Vietnamese tourists to Australia, up 50% last year with 150,000 visitors.

Philippa King, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), said that tourism is extremely important for the bilateral relationship.

Australia and Vietnam have committed at high levels to expanding our relationship with one another, she said, as cited by VOV.

"We want to see as many Vietnamese visitors to Australia as possible and Vietnam wants to see as many Australians visiting Vietnam as possible. This will enhance understanding of our two countries, our culture, and education."

"It really strengthens our bilateral ties that underpins the commitment that our governments have got to improve our relationship to make Australia and Vietnam crucial partners in the region," she added.

Participants highlighted Vietnam’s tourism potential which offers interesting cultural experiences, numerous historic relic sites, beautiful beaches, mountains, terraced fields, and nature reserves with rich biodiversity.

Andrew Hogg, Tourism Australia’s Executive General Manager of Eastern Markets and Aviation, said that there were more than 300,000 Australians traveling to Vietnam last year.

"I travelled to Vietnam myself. I’ve been to Ha Long Bay, HCM City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Nha Trang and I experienced Vietnam myself when I was travelling around. It was a beautiful country. And we know that Vietnamese tourism is very high standard. On the other side, we had more than 150,000 or more than a 50% increase on Vietnamese people coming to Australia."

Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, said Vietnam hopes to welcome more Australian tourists and turn Australia into Vietnam’s 7th largest supplier of visitors.

Minister Counsellor of the Vietnamese Embassy in Australia Nghiem Xuan Hoa said the bilateral relations have witnessed strong development in recent years, notably the establishment of the strategic comprehensive partnership in March, according to VietnamPlus.

In their joint statement, their leaders agreed to seek opportunities to spur tourism development, he continued.

Hoa pointed to advantages to promote tourism cooperation between the two countries, including the growing bilateral relations, Australian tourists' great interest in Vietnam and vice versa, and joint efforts in forging tourism cooperation.

The Australia-Vietnam Travel Symposium is organized to promote tourism cooperation between the two countries and increase the number of tourist exchanges, thereby contributing to the development of tourism in Vietnam and Australia.

This is also an opportunity for both sides to update new information on policies, tourism products, tours, tourism infrastructure, according to Travel Daily News.

Vietnam received attention from the Australian press and media as well as tourists from this country. According to a report by the online flight booking platform Skyscanner in October 2023, Ho Chi Minh City is in the top 10 most sought-after destinations for Australian tourists, with a growth rate of 246% in the past year. Skyscanner also forecasts that HCMC will be one of the top destinations for Australian tourists by 2024.

Australian newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald predicts that Vietnam will continue to be the favorite destination of Australians in 2024, Vietnam is an ideal destination for the “regenerative tourism” trend. This newspaper also recommends Vietnam as one of the promising destinations for tourists who want to start their journey to explore new lands.

Australian Micenet magazine specializing in event business has praised and evaluated central Vietnam as an emerging “hot” destination for MICE tourism.
