From July 7 to 14, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat led the delegation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam to visit and work with partners in France.

They participated in the opening ceremony of the International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). They attended and delivered speeches at the 63rd Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva (Switzerland).

Speaking at the 63rd Series of Meetings on July 14, Minister Huynh Thanh Dat said that as a member of WIPO, Vietnam is ready to support WIPO's joint initiatives in post-pandemic recovery.

Vietnam facilitates stakeholders in the intellectual property and innovation ecosystem, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, innovative start-ups, and encourages the participation of women and young people.

Vietnam is committed to continuing to be a responsible member of WIPO, for the development of an inclusive, balanced and dynamic global intellectual property ecosystem. Vietnam wishes to contribute to enriching mankind's knowledge and culture, fostering economic growth and sustainable development.

The Minister suggested that WIPO continue to support Vietnam in implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy and the revised Law on Intellectual Property; forming and fostering intellectual property and culture in society; strengthen cooperation activities in intellectual property training.

On this occasion, Minister Huynh Thanh Dat witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office and WIPO on the implementation of the National Intellectual Property Strategy, and the extension of the cooperation agreement between Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam and UK.

The Minister said that these cooperation agreements will help implement effective activities, contribute to Vietnam's intellectual property and innovation ecosystem.

Attending the opening ceremony of the International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development 2022 hosted by UNESCO and the seminar “The role of science in policy making,” Minister Huynh Thanh Dat participated in the discussion with guests who are senior leaders of UNESCO member countries, including the Ministers of Science and Technology of China, Cuba, South Africa, Nigeria, Honduras and two scientists who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2012 and 2021.

Sharing about the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic leading to a change in the relationship between science and policy making, Minister Huynh Thanh Dat emphasized the importance of renewing thinking in science and technology management, encouraging experimentation, taking risks, strengthening the spirit of open science and innovation.

The Minister also proposed the formation of platforms for sharing patent information, data and scientific publications to help countries access and keep up with the development trend of science and technology in the world.

He mentioned about the priority, the balance between economic growth and ensuring safety, security for the people, the need to put people at the center of all development policies.
